Steiner Defends Verstappen in F1 Swearing Row: A Look at the FIA’s Controversial Sanctions
Formula 1's most infamous profanity user voices his opinion on FIA's cursing scandal
Guenther Steiner weighs in on the controversy surrounding Max Verstappen's use of swear words
Guenther Steiner has expressed his opposition to the penalty given to Max Verstappen for using foul language.
The driver from Red Bull received a community service sanction for using an expletive to describe his RB20 during a press conference in Singapore.
Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris contested the FIA's ruling to sanction Verstappen, who expressed his dissatisfaction openly.
Former Haas team leader Steiner was once known as the most infamous for his profanity in Formula 1.
His use of expletives gained fame on Netflix's Drive To Survive.
However, he shared with the Red Flags podcast, "I've never been heard using curse words at a press conference or in any similar situation."
He defended Verstappen.
"Steiner believes the actions taken weren't overblown, clarifying that Max was discussing his vehicle's condition, not an individual's circumstances."
Could he have selected different words? Absolutely.
"He mentioned frequently used terminology. Absolutely."
"Perhaps it's not correct. But is it incorrect? That might not be the case either."
"I find myself quite undecided at this moment."
"During the competition, over the radio, it's completely clear to me since the adrenaline levels are elevated."
"The words you speak here, they don't carry weight with you. You leave them behind once you go."
"F1 excels in censoring it. They mute two specific terms…
"I don't believe it was essential to create such a fuss over it."
Steiner recalled a different rule from the FIA aimed at penalizing F1 racers for donning jewelry within the paddock area, a regulation that annoyed Hamilton.
"Steiner recalled, "To me, it feels quite akin to how I view jewellery."
"It's 2024 now. That's what I keep reminding myself. Someone has an earring on? Why would that matter to me at all?"
