Sir Jackie Stewart on Hamilton’s Ferrari Challenge: Navigating the Shift at 40
"Challenging Transition" – Jackie Stewart Offers Opinion on Lewis Hamilton's Move to Ferrari
F1 icon Sir Jackie Stewart gives his perspective on the anticipated move of Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari.
F1 icon Sir Jackie Stewart is of the opinion that Lewis Hamilton may face greater challenges in transitioning to Ferrari because of his older age.
In a surprising turn of events, Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, left fans and the Formula 1 community astounded with his February announcement about his departure from Mercedes. He revealed plans to make a sensational move to Ferrari in 2025.
Hamilton is set to make his debut with Ferrari at the Australian Grand Prix that marks the beginning of next year's season, at the age of 40. Three-time world champion Stewart expressed being "quite taken aback" by the timing of this transition.
"Stewart expressed his astonishment on the RacingNews365 podcast, noting that joining a team that has just recently emerged as highly competitive was unexpected for him, especially at the age of 40."
The Ferrari team experienced a significant decline. Numerous changes in the management of the Ferrari Formula 1 squad have caused disruptions.
The situation has now become more stable for them. Moreover, when Lewis visits the Ferrari factory, he finds it impressive.
"Few other brands, as one might refer to them, in Formula 1 have maintained a level of consistency comparable to what Ferrari has achieved over an extended period."
Stewart mentioned, "I believe it's harder for him to accomplish this at the age of 40 compared to when he was younger, say around 25 or 30 years old."
"However, his abilities and prowess remain undeniable, as clearly demonstrated in his recent performance at the British Grand Prix this year, where Hamilton snapped a two-year streak without a win."
"Switching to Ferrari is out of the ordinary, yet eventually, he must hang up his helmet as a race car driver. He believes he's not there yet, and that's something I can relate to."
Nonetheless, Stewart grasps why driving for Ferrari is attractive, as he nearly became part of the iconic Italian team before deciding against finalizing an agreement.
"I had agreed to race for Ferrari, but I found myself having to inform them that it was no longer feasible due to what seemed like constant shifts at Mr. Ferrari's discretion. As a result, I ultimately never got the chance to race for Ferrari," he shared.
Upon my visit, I found myself utterly surprised. The magnificence of the location was striking. There was a remarkable atmosphere that enveloped the area. The Italian people are exceptional; they communicate with such precision and enthusiasm, and I believe that Lewis must have encountered this as well.
