Conservative Member of Parliament Natalie Elphicke has switched her allegiance to the Labour Party.

The Member of Parliament for Dover, a supporter of Brexit, noted that since her election in 2019, the transformation within the Conservative party has been significant and must be acknowledged.

She criticized the "failed commitments of Rishi Sunak's exhausted and disordered administration," further stating that Labour "aims towards the future – towards creating a Britain filled with hope, optimism, opportunity, and equity."

Mrs. Elphicke has become the second Conservative MP to switch allegiance to the Labour Party within a span of 11 days, following the defection of ex-minister Dan Poulter to the same party.

Dr. Poulter, who also works part-time for the NHS, stated that he could not continue to face his NHS coworkers and patients while still being a member of the Conservative Party.

Mrs. Elphicke, a supporter of Liz Truss's 2022 prime ministerial campaign, switched her allegiance to the Labour Party just before Prime Minister's Questions began at noon on Wednesday, as observed by Conservative MPs who gestured towards her.

In his introductory comments at PMQs, Sir Keir greeted Mrs Elphicke as she joined the party, and his spokesperson subsequently stated that the latest Labour MP will assume a voluntary position focusing on housing policy.

In her announcement, she stated that her decision to switch was primarily influenced by "housing issues and border safety and security."

She stated that in 2019, the Conservative Party positioned itself at the core of British political discourse, focusing on "shaping the future and maximizing the forthcoming opportunities for our nation."

"She noted that much has transformed since that time."

"The appointed Prime Minister was removed from office in a coup orchestrated by the non-elected Rishi Sunak.

Under the leadership of Rishi Sunak, the Conservative Party is now synonymous with inefficiency and discord.

"The moderate positions have been forsaken and crucial commitments from the 2019 manifesto have been discarded."

She mentioned that since that time, the Labour Party has undergone a complete transformation, shifting away from Jeremy Corbyn's leadership. Now, under Keir Starmer, it has positioned itself in the central spectrum of British politics.

"She expressed confidence in its acceptance of Brexit and described its economic and defense strategies as reliable and trustworthy," she stated.

In the past, Mrs. Elphicke has sharply criticized Sir Keir, accusing him of neglecting the issue of small boat crossings in January 2023.

In April of the previous year, she authored a piece arguing that the electorate should be wary of Labour's stance on immigration, which she cited as a primary reason for her defection.

The influx of asylum seekers arriving by small vessels poses a significant concern in her district, primarily landing on the shores of Dover.

Just before Prime Minister's Questions started, it was announced that another MP has switched allegiance to the Labour Party.

Keir Starmer expressed delight at the announcement, warmly greeting Natalie Elphicke into the party during his initial comments.

She follows in the footsteps of Dan Poulter, who switched his allegiance from the Conservatives to Labour just a few weeks earlier.

Following the harsh outcomes of the recent local elections, Labour is highlighting these MP defections to depict a government that appears to have lost both public trust and support from its own members.

The prime minister found himself in a powerless position. His only option was to express gratitude to the council members who were not re-elected and to Andy Street, the Conservative mayor who was defeated in the West Midlands mayoral race.

Responses to Mrs. Elphicke's departure from the Conservative Party were primarily of shock, with a minister expressing to Sky News that it was "ridiculous and shameful… an embarrassment and a joke."

"Another Conservative MP commented, 'I doubt she has truly found her place; her absence won't be felt.'"

Huw Merriman, the Conservative MP representing Bexhill and Battle, located down the coast from Dover, expressed his surprise, noting, "I was really taken aback… it's generally acknowledged that she has consistently aligned with the more conservative elements of our party and has been vocal, especially regarding immigration and Labour's policies."

He expressed to Sky News, "It appears to be a clear shift toward career opportunism on her part, while also suggesting that the Labour Party lacks a firm set of principles."

"I was truly astonished by it. It was hard to grasp what was unfolding before my eyes. Additionally, I regret the impact this has on politics, as it erodes public trust in politicians when we abandon our values based on opinion polls."

Mrs. Elphicke secured her position in Dover by capturing 56.9% of the vote. She chose to run after her former husband, Charlie Elphicke, was suspended from the Conservative Party and opted not to seek re-election due to charges of sexual assault involving two women, totaling three counts.

He was convicted on all charges and received a two-year prison sentence.
