Sergio Perez Shuts Down Retirement Rumours with ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ Defiance: ‘I’m Not Leaving
Sergio Perez has dismissed rumors that he is planning to retire from Formula 1, referencing 'The Wolf of Wall Street' in his response.
Sergio Perez has taken steps to quash speculation that he might be on the verge of retiring from Formula 1.
Joe Saward, a journalist covering Formula 1, indicated earlier this week that Perez intends to announce his retirement at his home Grand Prix in Mexico City at the end of October.
Saward mentioned an intriguing rumor circulating in Singapore: Perez and Red Bull may have devised a strategy for him to announce his retirement in Mexico. This approach would provide a smoother departure for Perez, avoiding the harsher reality of being fired, and would also minimize any negative impact on Red Bull's sales in the Americas.
"This would allow Red Bull to explore options for a new driver in 2025. Although they invest heavily in their young driver programs, Red Bull currently lacks a candidate prepared to join Max Verstappen."
On Sunday, Perez went on X (previously known as Twitter) to respond to the rumors by posting a well-known scene from the movie ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ where the line “I’m not leaving” is said.
The Mexican driver, who has been facing ongoing challenges while racing with his Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen, recently confessed that he had momentarily considered retiring, and his future after this season is still unclear.
Perez shared with DAZN that he had considered leaving F1 over the past six months, but ultimately it only took him three seconds to decide to stay.
"Ultimately, after all these years, choosing to quit and essentially surrender would have been the easy way out. I could never have forgiven myself for doing that."
"My primary goal is to reach a stage in my career where I have the autonomy to decide when to end it, rather than being told by someone else."
"At the moment, I am feeling highly motivated and genuinely eager to stay in Formula 1. I find it enjoyable. The great moments are especially fun, but you also come to appreciate the tough times."
Perez suggested that his existing contract, valid until the close of 2025, is probably going to be his final one.
"At the moment, I still have another two years left on my contract. Although two years in Formula 1 feels like quite a while, I'm aware that the end of my career is approaching," he mentioned.
"I can't imagine competing here at Fernando's age. I have a lot of respect for everything he achieves at this stage in his life."
"It's not that I don't want to; it's just that I have young kids and I want to dedicate a lot more time to them. Ultimately, they will be the deciding factor."
