Ricciardo Apologizes After Hulkenberg Clash: Drama at the Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo on collision with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo comments on the incident with Haas during the Italian Grand Prix in F1
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he apologized to Nico Hulkenberg after they had a collision on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo was engaged in a tussle with Nico Hulkenberg in the midfield during the first lap of Sunday's race at Monza, where the two collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed there was enough room, but then experienced a collision – which resulted in Hulkenberg's Haas being pushed onto the dirt and losing position to his teammate Kevin Magnussen.
The Australian driver received a five-second penalty for the incident, but subsequently had to serve a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics made contact with the car while he was serving his initial penalty during a pitstop.
Ricciardo concluded a challenging race in his home country for the Red Bull team, finishing in 13th place.
"In the end, we just weren't fast enough today, even without considering the penalties," he stated.
"We gave it a shot, and I was really having fun with the close racing at the beginning, but then I bumped into Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I talked to him and mentioned that I believed we had enough space. However, I realized we made contact, indicating I didn't leave sufficient room, so I apologized to him."
"It's challenging because you give it your all, but even the tiniest differences can have a big impact."
"The car performed reasonably well afterwards, and we gave it our all with the resources available. From Friday afternoon until today, I was striving to extract the utmost performance from the vehicle."
"I personally feel much better this weekend, and we nearly earned some points."
Tsunoda 'frustrated' after race
Laurent Mekies from RB stated that the Italian Grand Prix was influenced by Hulkenberg. An incident between Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda led to the Japanese driver's race coming to an early end.
Yuki Tsunoda expressed his frustration, stating that it was unfortunate his race ended shortly after it began due to a collision with Nico.
"I did my best to maintain a safe distance, but it appeared he froze up, which led to him losing control and colliding with me."
"Regrettably, we were forced to pull the car out of the race due to damage sustained to the floor."
"I noticed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding and I just couldn't control it."
"Next up are Baku and Singapore, where our car is expected to do well. We're optimistic about having successful weekends at both locations."
Mekies is frustrated about the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to lose important time on the track with the newly updated RB car that was brought to Monza.
"Regarding today's race, it can be said that Hulkenberg set the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Following that, Nico collided with Yuki, which ultimately caused us to withdraw the car," he stated.
"The most disappointing part of Yuki's retirement is that we missed out on 40 laps that would have helped us learn more about the updates we implemented at this event."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty because we failed to properly implement the initial penalty."
“We must reassess our procedures in this situation and take lessons from the error made today. While such incidents occur, our pit crew’s performance has been outstanding overall this season.”
