Ricciardo Apologizes After Hulkenberg Clash at Italian GP; Tsunoda’s Race Ends in Frustration
Daniel Ricciardo comments on his incident with Nico Hulkenberg: "I believed there was enough room; I said sorry"
Daniel Ricciardo responds to the clash with Haas during the Italian Grand Prix in Formula 1
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he expressed his apologies to Nico Hulkenberg after the two drivers collided on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo was competing with Nico Hulkenberg in the middle of the field during the first lap of Sunday’s race in Monza when the two collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then experienced a collision. This incident led to Hulkenberg's Haas being pushed onto the dirt, allowing his teammate Kevin Magnussen to overtake him.
The Australian driver received a five-second time penalty for the incident. However, he subsequently had to serve a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics touched his car during the original penalty at his pit stop.
Ricciardo finished a difficult race at his home track for the Red Bull team in 13th place.
“In the end, our speed wasn’t sufficient today, even disregarding the penalties,” he remarked.
“We gave it a shot, and I was having fun with the close racing at the beginning, but I collided with Nico at Turn 8.
"After the race, I had a conversation with him. I initially believed there was enough space, but then I felt the impact, which indicated I hadn't given him sufficient room. I offered my apologies."
"It's challenging because you compete intensely, but even the tiniest differences can be decisive."
"The vehicle performed adequately after that, and we gave it our all with the resources available. From Friday afternoon until today, I aimed to extract the utmost performance from the car."
“I’m feeling much improved this weekend, and we nearly earned some points.”
Tsunoda Expresses Disappointment
Laurent Mekies from RB stated that the Italian Grand Prix was heavily influenced by Nico Hulkenberg. An incident between the Haas driver and Yuki Tsunoda resulted in Tsunoda having to retire from the race.
"I'm quite disappointed; it's unfortunate that my race ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda expressed.
"I attempted to give him plenty of room, but it appeared he froze up, leading to a loss of control and a collision with me."
“Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained to the floor.
“I immediately noticed something was wrong and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding uncontrollably, making it impossible for me to drive.”
"We're heading to Baku and Singapore next, where our car is expected to do well. We're optimistic about having successful weekends at both locations."
Mekies is frustrated about the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to lose important track time with the updated RB car at Monza.
"Regarding today's race, it can be said that Hulkenberg set the pace. Daniel was penalized with a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Subsequently, Nico collided with Yuki, which caused us to retire the car," he stated.
"The most disappointing part about Yuki's retirement is that we missed out on 40 laps that could have enhanced our knowledge of the new updates we implemented at this event."
"Since the initial penalty wasn't properly applied, Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty."
"We must assess our processes in this situation and take lessons from today's error. Although incidents like this occur, our pit crew has typically performed outstandingly this season."
