Ricciardo Apologizes After Hulkenberg Clash at Italian GP; Tsunoda’s Race Also Impacted by Haas Driver
Daniel Ricciardo comments on incident with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo responds to the collision with Haas during the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he apologized to Nico Hulkenberg after the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix due to a collision that occurred between them on the first lap.
Red Bull driver Ricciardo and Hulkenberg were vying for position in the middle of the pack during the first lap of Sunday’s race at Monza when they collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then experienced a collision. This incident caused Hulkenberg's Haas to go off track, allowing Kevin Magnussen, his teammate, to pass him.
The Australian driver received a five-second penalty for the incident. However, he was later required to serve an additional 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics touched his car during the initial penalty at the pit stop.
Ricciardo concluded a challenging race at his home track for the Red Bull team by finishing in 13th place.
"At the end of the day, we simply weren't fast enough, penalties aside," he commented.
"We gave it our all, and I was having a good time racing side-by-side initially, but then I collided with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I talked to him. I believed we had enough space, but I felt the collision and realized I hadn't left sufficient room, so I apologized."
"It's challenging because you push yourself, but even the tiniest differences matter."
“The vehicle performed adequately afterwards, and we exerted maximum effort with the resources available to us. From Friday afternoon until today, I aimed to extract the utmost performance from the car.”
"I personally feel much better this weekend, and we came close to earning points."
Tsunoda Feels Frustrated
Laurent Mekies from RB stated that the Italian Grand Prix was influenced by Hulkenberg. A crash involving Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda led to Tsunoda's race coming to a premature end.
"I'm quite upset; it's disappointing that my race ended just a few laps in because of an incident with Nico," said Tsunoda.
"I attempted to give plenty of room, but it appeared he froze up, leading to a loss of control and resulting in a collision with me."
“Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained on the floor.
"I immediately noticed it and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding and I just couldn't control it."
“We're heading to Baku and Singapore next. Our car is expected to do well on those tracks, so we are optimistic about having successful weekends coming up.”
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it cost him crucial time on the track with the newly updated RB car at Monza.
"In today's race, Hulkenberg seemed to take control. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track, and then Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car," he stated.
"The most disappointing part about Yuki retiring is missing out on 40 laps that could have helped us learn more about the new updates we brought here."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty because the initial penalty wasn't carried out properly."
"We must evaluate our procedures in this situation and take lessons from the error made today. Although incidents like this occur, our pit crew's performance has typically been outstanding this season."
