Ricciardo Apologises for Hulkenberg Clash Amid Penalty-Marred Italian GP; Tsunoda’s Frustration with Haas Collision
Daniel Ricciardo addresses confrontation with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo comments on the collision with Haas during the Italian Grand Prix in Formula 1
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he apologized to Nico Hulkenberg after they collided during the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Ricciardo was competing with Hulkenberg in the middle of the group during the first lap of Sunday’s race at Monza when the two collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then he experienced a collision. This resulted in Hulkenberg's Haas being pushed off the track and giving up a position to his teammate, Kevin Magnussen.
The Australian driver received a five-second penalty for the incident. However, he was subsequently required to serve a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics touched his car during the initial penalty at his pitstop.
Ricciardo concluded a difficult race at his home track for the Red Bull team, finishing in 13th place.
"At the end of the day, we simply didn't have enough speed, regardless of the penalties," he mentioned.
"We gave it a shot, and I was having fun battling side by side at the beginning, but I ended up colliding with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I had a conversation with him. I initially believed we had enough space, but I felt the collision and realized I hadn't given him sufficient room, so I said sorry."
"It's challenging because you compete intensely, but even the tiniest differences can have a significant impact.
"The vehicle performed adequately afterward, and we exerted maximum effort given our resources. From Friday afternoon until today, I aimed to extract the full potential of the car."
“I’m feeling much better this weekend, and we nearly earned some points.”
Tsunoda Expresses Disappointment
RB's performance at the Italian Grand Prix was heavily influenced by Hulkenberg, according to team member Laurent Mekies. A crash involving Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda resulted in the Japanese driver's race coming to an early conclusion.
Yuki Tsunoda expressed his frustration, stating that it was unfortunate his race effectively ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico.
"I attempted to maintain a wide berth, but it appeared he froze up, leading to a loss of control and colliding with me."
"Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained to the floor."
"I immediately sensed something was wrong and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding and I just couldn't control it."
"We're heading to Baku and Singapore next, where our car is expected to do well. Hopefully, we'll have successful weekends coming up."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to miss important track time with the upgraded RB car that was brought to Monza.
"Today's race was largely controlled by Hulkenberg. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Afterward, Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car," he stated.
"The most exasperating part about Yuki retiring is that we missed out on 40 laps which would have boosted our knowledge of the new updates we implemented here."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty as we failed to properly implement the initial one."
"We must re-examine our protocols in this situation and take lessons from the error we made today. Such incidents occur, but overall, our pit crew's performance has been outstanding this season."
