Revving Up Nostalgia: The 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona’s Artificial V-8 Roar in an Electric Era
Fratzonic suggests that while electric vehicles need to emit some noise, is it necessary to mimic the sound of a traditional combustion engine? The upcoming 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona breathes new life into a classic American muscle car brand. It comes equipped with a sophisticated sound system designed to imitate the roar of the V-8 engine, which won't be available in this latest model.
Introduced in March, the Daytona represents the electric variant of the revamped Charger, which is available as well with a gas-powered, twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 engine. The electric versions are equipped with something Dodge has dubbed the Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust, taking its name from Dodge's own Fratzonic emblem.

The synthetic exhaust mechanism employs devices attached beneath the vehicle to generate noise. This noise is then intensified by devices similar to those in mufflers that modify sound, and subsequently channeled from the vehicle. Moreover, the system takes into account the velocity of the car and the driver's actions such as steering and applying pressure to the pedals. The result is a convincing imitation of the sound produced by a V-8 engine, as showcased in a promotional video by Dodge.
The audio featured in the clip showcases the Charger Daytona R/T and Charger Daytona Scat Pack versions, which are set to debut as the initial electric iterations of the Charger later this year. It's anticipated that Dodge will develop a distinct audio profile for a forthcoming model that's speculated to have enhanced performance capabilities, potentially named the SRT Banshee.
The volume of the noise can be adjusted depending on the driving setting selected. Choosing Sport mode produces a moderate noise level, whereas options like Drag, Drift, Donut, and Track amplify the sound. For drivers who prefer a quiet ride without the synthetic V-8 sounds, there's also a Stealth mode available.
Mandates at the federal level stipulate that electric vehicles must produce a certain level of noise to alert those walking by. In 2023, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) took into account a proposal that aimed to implement these alert noises in numerous aging vehicles. However, the question arises: should electric vehicles mimic the sound of traditional gasoline-powered cars they are designed to supplant?
