Ofsted's practice of providing single-word evaluations for public schools has been immediately discontinued, a decision celebrated as a "significant milestone for children."
Before, the agency overseeing schools issued one of four possible ratings following an evaluation: outstanding, good, requires improvement, or inadequate.
Starting this academic year, the Department for Education (DfE) has announced that four grades will be assigned within the current sub-categories: quality of education, behavior and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management.
Starting in September 2025, school report cards will be implemented, offering parents a detailed analysis of school performance and enhancing the impact of inspections on school improvement, the announcement stated.
The adjustment comes after consultations with the educational community and relatives of headteacher Ruth Perry, who died by suicide following an Ofsted assessment that demoted her Caversham Primary School in Reading from "outstanding" to "inadequate" due to issues with safeguarding.
In 2022, a coroner's inquest determined that the inspection procedures played a role in her demise.
The Department for Education stated that simplistic single phrase grades do not offer a just or precise evaluation of a school's overall performance. They added that this modification will aid in removing obstacles to opportunities.
