Renault Symbioz (2024): Füllt die Lücke im SUV-Segment mit Mut und Innovation

Renault Symbioz (2024): Embracing the Gap

The compact SUV fits snugly between the Captur and Austral in Renault's lineup

It's akin to spotting an opening in rush hour traffic when it comes to Renault's strategy – they've identified a niche in their SUV range that sits right between the Captur and Austral. Extend a warm welcome to the fresh Symbioz.

The distinct name was previously associated with a study back in 2017, although it shares minimal similarities with the new compact SUV. Instead, the focus is on not allowing its corporate siblings, the new Dacia Duster and the recently updated Nissan Qashqai, to outshine it. Even though, of course, Renault wouldn't publicly admit this…

However, resemblances can be partially seen in the profile and the dimensions. A detailed comparison of the threesome will soon be underway, but the focus here and now is on the latest Renault Symbioz (remember, it's pronounced with a soft 'S' at the end!).

The Symbioz is built upon an extended version of the CMF-B platform, which is shared with the B-segment's Clio and Captur, as well as the C-segment's Arkana. Let's take a closer look at the specific dimensions:

With this, the Renault is roughly at the same level as the Nissan Qashqai, but it's about 13 centimeters shorter than the latest VW Tiguan.

There are seven exterior paint options available for the Symbioz, including the newly introduced Mercury Blue. DeZir Red is offered at no extra charge in the configuration tool, which also includes five other shades: Pearl White, Rafale Gray, Black Pearl Black, Steel Gray, and Iron Blue. The Symbioz's aesthetic is completed with sizable 19-inch wheels available in the Esprit Alpine and Iconic styles. All wheel options, both 18 and 19 inches, have been freshly designed and are unique to this model.

The initial perception of the Symbioz's cockpit is that it appears to be a blend of elements from the Captur and the Austral. Indeed, Renault confirms this by stating: "The layout of the Symbioz's dashboard is similar to that of the latest Captur."

The rear seat can be adjusted 16 centimeters forward and backward, providing rear passengers with up to 221 millimeters of extra legroom. When the rear seat is moved to its most forward position, the trunk space increases from 492 to 624 liters, and it can expand up to 1,582 liters when the rear seats are completely folded down in a 60:40 split.

The trunk is designed without a lip,">king the flat floor easily accessible for loading even bulky items without difficulty. Upon initially sitting in the Symbioz, one notices that legroom is ample, and headroom is sufficient, even with the panoramic glass roof. The cockpit area also presents little to complain about. Navigation within the controls is intuitive, and it's appreciated that Renault has retained some physical buttons. The displays are straightforward and provide clear information.

Additionally, the Symbioz features 24.7 liters of storage space within its interior, with seven liters of that space just in the glove compartment.

The Solarbay panoramic glass roof, initially introduced in the Rafale and Scenic E-Tech Electric, is now available for the Symbioz as well. The "AmpliSky" feature of the Solarbay glass eliminates the need for a sunshade. This active system utilizes PDLC technology (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) to selectively dim sections of the sunroof as desired, responding to electrical currents to alter its molecular structure.

The Symbioz model, even in its Techno variant, comes equipped with the OpenR Link multimedia system, which incorporates Google and runs on Android Automotive 12. This in-car entertainment system enables both wired and wireless connection for smartphones through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Renault is recognized for incorporating a prominent 10.4-inch vertical touchscreen accessible in all models. A separate 10.3-inch display provides the driver with journey details, including navigation prompts. Alongside Google services such as Google Maps and Google Assistant, a diverse array of applications, over 50 depending on the country and model, can be downloaded via the Google Play Store.

Currently, the Renault Symbioz is equipped solely with the hybrid E-Tech 145 powertrain, but it's expected that traditional gasoline engines will be introduced in the future. The likelihood of a diesel version is slim. This system integrates both series and parallel hybrid technologies, combining a pair of electric motors – a 36-kW electric motor and an 18-kW high-voltage starter-generator – with a robust 69 kW/94 hp 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine. This engine works in tandem with a smart, clutchless multi-mode transmission and is supported by a 1.2-kWh battery.

The Competition for the Renault Symbioz:

The E-Tech Hybrid 145's multi-mode transmission offers two gears for electric propulsion and four gears for the combustion engine. The transitions between gears are seamlessly automatic. Altogether, the setup allows for a total of 14 different gear and drive combinations.

The Symbioz always begins in electric mode, enabling the driver to operate on pure electric power for up to 80 percent of urban driving time. When on the highway, the powertrain is designed to allow the combustion engine to directly power the wheels, unlike traditional hybrid systems where electric motors also operate simultaneously.

Like its counterparts Clio and Captur, the Symbioz also incorporates the innovative "E-Save" feature, which can be engaged using a button positioned on the left side of the steering wheel. The primary objective of this feature is to reduce fuel consumption without compromising on the driving experience, by maintaining the battery's charge at a minimum of 40 percent.

Renault has not yet disclosed specifics on this matter. However, an approximate estimate can be made by considering the prices of the hybrid models of Captur, Arkana, and Austral in Germany, which are tagged at €29,950, €34,400, and €41,250 respectively. Our suggestion would be to anticipate a base price of about €32,500.
