Red Bull’s Razor-Thin Escape: Perez’s Near Miss with Verstappen at Miami GP

How narrowly did "fortunate" Red Bull avoid catastrophe at the Miami GP?

At the Miami Grand Prix's initial turn, Sergio Perez nearly collided with his Red Bull counterpart, Max Verstappen.

Red Bull's involvement in the F1 Miami Grand Prix was almost cut short right at the first turn due to a narrow escape from a collision between team members Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen.

Off to a quick beginning, Perez aimed to surge ahead of the two Ferraris by cutting inside in an effort to rise to second place. However, the Mexican driver struggled to decelerate his vehicle and experienced significant wheel lock-up entering Turn 1.

Video captured from Perez's vehicle revealed he narrowly avoided a collision with Verstappen, subsequently veering off course and falling to fifth place.

"">king back, had I been aware of the lack of grip on the inside, I never would have chosen that path," Perez stated, after ending the race in fifth position but later being elevated to fourth due to a penalty given to Carlos Sainz after the race.

I visited the location believing it to be secure. However, the moment I attempted to slow down, it became apparent that the car wouldn't halt. This resulted in the front wheels locking up, causing me to continue forward.

"This essentially meant I was on the verge of colliding with Max, so I had to ease off the brake to stop the front wheels from locking."

Red Bull's team leader, Christian Horner, acknowledged that Perez was fortunate to avoid colliding with his teammate, attributing this to what he termed an "optimistic" beginning.

"Horner described his initial outlook as hopeful. He mentioned that Charles did not get off to the best start, which he believes impacted Checo… forcing him to ease up for Charles and then find an opportunity heading into the first turn.

He made his move, clearly got himself into a tight spot, and was fortunate to avoid hitting Max in the first turn as well as dodging the Ferrari when re-entering the track.

"I was happy to notice that the majority of cars made it through that."

Verstappen, coming in after McLaren's Lando Norris, believes Perez damaged his diffuser when he lost grip on his RB20.

"I was fully alert. When I turned, I noticed he braked hard," he mentioned. "After the race, upon inspection, I discovered a slight mark on my diffuser, indicating something must have struck it.

"Indeed, it was a narrow escape. The situation could have easily turned catastrophic, affecting the entire team too. Fortunately, we were lucky."
