Red Bull’s Costly Dilemma: The High Stakes of Replacing Sergio Perez Amid Ferrari’s Resurgence and F1’s Evolving Landscape
Red Bull could face a substantial financial penalty amounting to millions if they decide to part ways with Sergio Perez, according to reports by Stewart Bell.
Carlos Sainz maintained Ferrari's momentum in Mexico, as the Spanish driver clinched a second consecutive win for the team, marking his fourth victory in his career. This triumph allowed Ferrari to overtake Red Bull and secure second place in the constructors’ championship, setting their sights on the top position with four races left in the season.
Although Scuderia's team leader, Frédéric Vasseur, had downplayed the pursuit of a championship being a priority in Austin, the situation shifted when they moved to the south of the border.

He mentioned that since the Monza race, their car has performed effectively on a wide range of tracks, which gives him confidence that they can remain competitive in the upcoming races as well.
In the paddock, lively conversations filled the air, all set against the quintessential ambiance of Mexico. The cultural scene was vibrant, especially with the Día de los Muertos festival, which took place on the Saturday following the Grand Prix, November 2nd. Additionally, the local food was a highlight, with the Taqueria proving popular among the drivers and attendees alike.
Significant Compensation if Red Bull Chooses to Dismiss
The main topic of discussion centered around Sergio Perez's future. The Mexican driver declared before the event that he plans to remain with Red Bull, even though he has faced a challenging season.
Ultimately, I am a member of a team and an organization. Picture this: you've spent four years with the top team globally, and they have just extended your contract for an additional two years," he stated.
“They appreciate what I do, which is why I remain employed with them.”
Sergio Perez's career seemed to hit rock bottom in front of his home crowd, as he experienced what he described as his "worst GP" on familiar turf. This followed his fifth exit in the first qualifying session of the season, culminating in a disappointing 17th place finish in the race, trailing 11 spots behind his teammate Max Verstappen, who was penalized with two 10-second penalties.
Pérez, who last secured a podium finish in China six months earlier, has significantly contributed to Red Bull's decline in the constructors' rankings. The team currently sits in third place, trailing behind McLaren and Ferrari. However, according to ESPN, Red Bull cannot simply part ways with the Mexican driver without paying a contract buy-out fee of £3.85 million ($5 million).
Sergio Perez has assured fans that this will not be his final Formula 1 race in Mexico, and he is confident about being part of the grid in 2025. ❌ What are your thoughts on Perez's return next year? pic.twitter.com/t99PaHdzwl— Crash.net – Formula 1 (@CRASH_NET_F1) October 27, 2024
Drivers have differing opinions about the modification of the rules. Verstappen, who is Checo's teammate, faced criticism following an incident where he forced Norris off the track on two occasions. This resulted in an additional 20 seconds being added to his pit stop time due to penalties. A similar situation occurred in Austin, where Norris received a penalty for overtaking Verstappen while both of them were off the track.
The FIA has responded by preparing to present a revised set of F1 racing guidelines during the second-to-last race in Qatar. Reports indicate that the modifications have received approval, and the Grand Prix Drivers Association will give the final nod to the exact language.
However, certain individuals within the network believe that no modifications are necessary.
"There’s no controversy here," stated Valtteri Bottas from Sauber. "It’s simply that a few drivers are testing the boundaries of the rules more aggressively, almost to the point of mocking them, but the guidelines are straightforward."
Two Grand Prix events are in discussions for contract extensions. In the background, organizers of these races are actively negotiating with Formula 1 to renew their agreements. This includes the event in Mexico, which is set to expire following next year's race.
Event director Alejandro Soberon stated that discussions have already begun with Formula 1, the city of Mexico, and government representatives to create a suitable partnership and secure an extension for the event.
"We're quite hopeful about having a race for numerous years ahead."
The Mexico City Grand Prix has earned its reputation as a favorite event on the Formula 1 schedule. Known as a destination race, it consistently draws in massive crowds, with the stands filled to capacity each year. For this year's race, tickets were snapped up within two hours, resulting in a weekend turnout of 404,958 spectators.
Belgium is currently negotiating with Formula 1, with its existing contract lasting until 2025. The event organizers are reportedly eager to secure a yearly race at Spa-Francorchamps, rather than sharing the event with the Netherlands in alternating years. However, the situation is challenging as Formula 1 is looking to broaden its scope by exploring opportunities in Africa and Asia, engaging in discussions with countries like South Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia.
After this upcoming weekend, the paddock will welcome a pause, as the race in Brazil marks the conclusion of the initial triple-header that wraps up the 2024 season.
The journey continues to São Paulo, the largest city in the southern hemisphere, which hosts the renowned Interlagos circuit. This location will honor the memory of Ayrton Senna, the legendary F1 World Champion who won three titles, as we mark the 30th anniversary of his death.

On Sunday, Verstappen showcased an impressive performance by moving from 17th place to secure a victory in a rainy race. This marked the conclusion of a hectic weekend that had been rescheduled because of the weather conditions.
With three races left in the season, Verstappen holds a significant 62-point advantage over Lando Norris, who secured a sixth-place finish in São Paulo, in the drivers' championship standings.
During the post-race press conference, Verstappen interjected with a brief inquiry.
"Thank you all for attending… however, I notice there are no representatives from the British media here."
"Are they required to rush to the airport, or are they unaware of the location of the press conference?"
The response was laughter, echoing from the drivers standing on stage to the journalists seated before them.
With a grin, Pierre Gasly responded, "That's a reasonable question."
The determined Verstappen defied expectations in Brazil.
He started the event aware that he would face a grid penalty, dropping five places due to replacing an engine component. This came after he had received two time penalties in Mexico for incidents involving his championship competitor, Norris.
In Brazil, Verstappen was compelled to address inquiries regarding his assertive approach to racing.
During the sprint race on Saturday, he received a penalty for violating the Virtual Safety Car rules, resulting in a loss of one position. Later, he was frustrated by the delayed response to a red flag during the qualifying session, which initially left him in 12th place but dropped him to 17th after his grid penalty was applied.
However, Verstappen showcased a performance that could be pivotal in the championship race, skillfully navigating the wet conditions to maintain his lead.

The Alpine Formula 1 team stands to gain a $50 million prize following their unforeseen double podium finish in Brazil.

The French team collected 33 points, which allowed them to climb from ninth to sixth in the constructors’ championship standings, moving ahead of Williams, Red Bull, and Haas.
Alpine currently holds a three-point advantage over Haas and leads RB by five points, with three grand prix races and a sprint race left this season. They are 37 points behind Aston Martin, who are in fifth place.
According to a report by Reuters, if Alpine manages to maintain their position at sixth place in the constructors' rankings by the end of the season, they could earn up to $50 million in prize money shared among the 10 teams.
The surprising outcome gave Alpine a crucial lift during a challenging 2024 season, which began with them having the slowest car on the track.
“That day felt incredible after such a challenging season,” Ocon remarked. “It's quite enjoyable to race here, especially with the rain evening out the performance differences.”
"The vehicle was quite challenging to handle on the dry track, but I felt comfortable once the rain began this morning. I really enjoy it here in wet conditions. Today was a unique race for our team."
Gasly, a fellow team member, commented: "It has been challenging for us to earn points, but under these circumstances, anything could happen." Gasly managed to secure two points by finishing seventh in the sprint race on Saturday.
"Nobody anticipated it until the conclusion. Two vehicles securing spots on the podium. I doubt anyone predicted that happening before the season began."
Oliver Oakes, the new head of the Alpine team, expressed some dissatisfaction about not advancing both cars to the final qualifying round, Q3. However, he noted that the team has more than compensated for this setback.
This group has consistently been exceptional, and that hasn't changed. Although they faced challenges at the beginning of the season, and the past year to year and a half didn't reflect the team's true nature, things have been formidable since my arrival. The team's morale is clearly visible.
"This winter looks promising, and it's exactly what we need to gain some traction."

On Friday, during the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Hill intensified his critique of Verstappen, alleging that the Dutch driver employs "fear and intimidation" tactics against his competitors in Formula 1.
When questioned about recent criticisms directed at him, Verstappen seemed to criticize Hill, stating, "Certain individuals are simply being bothersome. I am aware of who they are, but I generally don't give them much thought."

In response, Hill said, "This is definitely one of his finest performances. At the start, we speculated that today might be an opportunity for him to demonstrate his exceptional talent, and he has undoubtedly achieved that."

At that moment, he was in second place, trailing behind Alpine's Esteban Ocon, because race leaders George Russell and Lando Norris chose to make a pit stop right after the previous Virtual Safety Car period concluded.
After the race resumed with a rolling restart and the deployment of a second Safety Car, Verstappen quickly overtook Ocon to seize the lead on Lap 44. He executed this move by making a bold maneuver on the inside of Turn 1, completing his impressive comeback from the back of the field.
Verstappen extended his lead to almost 20 seconds, securing his eighth victory of the season and his first since the Spanish Grand Prix in June. This dominant performance highlighted his path towards becoming a four-time world champion.
Verstappen currently holds a 62-point advantage in the championship standings, bringing him very close to securing his fourth drivers' title at the upcoming race in Las Vegas.
Esteban Ocon finished ahead of his Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly, securing an impressive and surprising double podium finish for the French team. This achievement brought a rare moment of happiness in an otherwise difficult 2024 season.
On a pivotal day in the championship battle, Norris was unable to take advantage of his pole position, experiencing a significant drop to sixth place. He finished behind Russell, who secured fourth, and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.
McLaren's choice to bring Norris in for a pit stop before the red flag was retrospectively seen as a mistake, though Norris himself also slipped up. During a disastrous restart, he veered off track at Turn 1, causing him to fall from fourth to seventh place.
He managed to advance by just one more spot after the McLaren team asked his teammate, Oscar Piastri, to let him pass for the second time that weekend.
Norris and McLaren might encounter even more difficulties, as the championship contender is under scrutiny for possibly violating the start procedure, which will be examined after the race.
Norris accidentally drove off from the starting line to begin another formation lap after the race start was halted because Lance Stroll had stranded his Aston Martin in the gravel before the race officially began.
Russell, along with Red Bull teammates Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson, will face an investigation for possibly committing the same violation.
Tsunoda secured the seventh position, while Piastri, who received a 10-second penalty due to a collision with Lawson, ended up in eighth place. Lawson managed to finish in ninth, just ahead of the seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton.
Carlos Sainz of Ferrari experienced a crash at the first turn, whereas Nico Hulkenberg was the first racer since 2007 to be given a black-and-white flag. This happened after marshals assisted him in getting his Haas car back on the track when it got stuck on a kerb.
After qualifying in seventh place, Alex Albon was disappointed about the missed opportunity as Williams had no choice but to pull his car from the grand prix. This decision came after his vehicle suffered significant damage from a major crash during the Q3 session.
