Rain Soaked Triumph: Marc Marquez’s Unexpected San Marino MotoGP Victory
Marc Marquez describes his victory at Misano as "completely unforeseen" and admits it would have been "impossible" without the rain. He stated, "If it hadn't been for the rain, competing with the leading riders would have been out of the question."
Marc Marquez expressed that his surprising win at the San Marino MotoGP would not have been feasible without the light rain that affected the beginning of the race.
The Gresini racer believed he had "messed up" his weekend by crashing during Q2, resulting in a ninth-place start on the grid.
Marquez had a tough time advancing in the sprint and managed to secure only fifth place.
A drizzle at the beginning of the grand prix helped Marquez become a strong contender for the win on Sunday. The Spanish rider overtook Francesco Bagnaia to claim the lead on the eighth lap out of 27.
Realizing his speed was advantageous for the latter part of the race, Marquez effectively held off Bagnaia and then surged ahead by 3.1 seconds to cross the finish line first, securing his second victory within a week in 2024.
However, Marquez conceded following the race that he wouldn't have been capable of competing at the forefront if the conditions had been more stable.
Marquez, who is currently trailing the championship leader by 53 points, remarked that the result was completely unforeseen. He noted that beginning from ninth position, it would have been impossible to compete with the frontrunners if not for the rainfall.
"We were aware that our performance in the latter half of the race was exceptionally strong. For me, the crucial aspect wasn't just leading the race; it was also creating a significant gap between us and the world champion, as well as Pecco, who is incredibly quick on this track."
"I managed to ride exceptionally well and quickly, defending my position in the first segment of the second part of the race. In the final laps, I switched to an offensive strategy."
During the heaviest downpour on the seventh lap, Jorge Martin decided to switch to his wet-weather bike while he was in second place.
Marquez stated that he did not plan to pit at that moment, even though he saw Franco Morbidelli crash out of third place in the wet conditions. However, he acknowledged that he would have gone to the pit if the weather had deteriorated on the next lap.
"No," he answered after considering whether to make a pit stop at the same time as Martin.
"Sure, if the rain had continued for another lap, it might have been the right moment to pit."
"But particularly when I noticed that no one else entered and only one competitor did, I realized I should remain outside, so that's what I did."
"I maintained good control initially, but I launched my attack on the following lap. I pushed myself to the limit. I noticed a few riders had fallen due to the extremely wet conditions in Turns 1 and 2, but we handled it effectively."
Marquez commented: "Our pace was strong throughout the weekend. However, we slipped up during the qualifying session."
"We have to make progress in that area within the next two weeks."
"Additionally, upon noticing the raindrops on my visor and the road surface, I chose to take a chance…"
