Quartararo Shines at Le Mans, Closer to Victory Amid Yamaha’s Season Struggle

Published

on

Fabio Quartararo thrilled the audience in Le Mans by securing his Yamaha a spot in Saturday's Q2, finishing just shy of the front row by under two tenths, a result he views as very encouraging.

Fabio Quartararo and Yamaha have experienced a less than ideal beginning to the 2024 MotoGP campaign.

Nonetheless, indications at Quartararo's local race hint that he might experience his most successful weekend of the year to date.

Jorge Martin: "At Le Mans, being smart is key as even milliseconds can be decisive."

During Friday's practice session, the remaining five Japanese motorcycles didn't manage to secure their positions in the automatic Q2 qualification spots.

Quartararo managed to just make it into the crucial Q2, providing him with a solid opportunity to aim for the top ten positions in both the sprint race and the grand prix.

When inquired whether his 10th place finish held extra significance, Quartararo affirmed, stating, "Definitely, especially considering we are just under two-tenths away from third [position]. This is genuinely encouraging."

"Hopefully, we'll be nearer to each other tomorrow. But I felt wonderful.

"The lap times were pretty solid, and although I'm not feeling totally comfortable on the bike, when everything is working perfectly, we can narrow the gap with our competitors."

Quartararo outpaced his teammate Alex Rins by more than four-tenths of a second in the second practice session, a lead that suggests factors beyond just local fan encouragement.

From the outset of FP1, Quartararo displayed impressive speed, indicating progress from the recent Jerez test, particularly within his team.

In recent events, when comparing Yamaha's primary rivals, Honda's team fell short of replicating Quartararo's impressive performance in Practice 2.

Quartararo managed to surpass competitors such as Enea Bastianini and the second-place finisher at Jerez, Marc Marquez, who both faced several challenges towards the end.

In his initial run with the new chassis during FP1, Quartararo conceded that it didn't feel as comfortable to him as the regular model.

"The French driver mentioned, "We gave it a shot during the first practice session, but sadly, we removed it for the second practice. It wasn't obvious, and I sensed it was somewhat less effective than the usual setup."

"We visited the basic bicycle, but tomorrow we're planning to experiment with a few things."
