Power Partnership: Tesla Electric and SunRun Unite to Enhance Texas Grid Stability with Home Energy-Storage Systems

Tesla Electric collaborates with SunRun to strengthen Texas energy network

Tesla consumers will shortly utilize domestic power storage solutions to aid the Texas electrical grid.

Tesla Electric, the automaker's energy division, has teamed up with SunRun, a solar energy firm, to launch a new initiative on Tuesday. This program is currently signing up clients to participate in a grid support system that relies on Tesla Powerwall batteries to provide additional power during peak usage times.

SunRun announced the successful registration of 150 clients and aims to increase that number going forward. The program is available to SunRun clients with the company's solar panels linked to Tesla Powerwall batteries and those who have opted for Tesla Electric as their energy supplier.

As the firm signs up these clients, they will be actively involved in a trial initiative managed by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the organization responsible for overseeing the electricity network within the state. Participants will be compensated with $400 for each Powerwall they contribute to the initiative during the year 2024. Additionally, SunRun stands to gain extra income from their involvement in this program.

SunRun points out that utilizing battery backups can strengthen the power network during extreme weather conditions. The firm highlighted that a recent hurricane, Beryl, resulted in electricity disruptions affecting close to three million residential and commercial properties just three weeks prior. Furthermore, in 2021, a significant part of the Texas electrical infrastructure was disabled due to a winter storm.

SunRun is launching its inaugural trial initiative in Texas, although it's not new to the residential battery backup scene. The company is designated as Ford's chosen installation partner for the energy reserve unit that accompanies the F-150 Lightning truck. This same system was part of a 2022 research project by Pacific Gas & Electric in California, exploring the integration of this equipment with the electrical grid. Additionally, SunRun has been involved in a philanthropic effort, furnishing complimentary battery backup systems to financially disadvantaged families in California, as part of a state-sponsored scheme unveiled in 2020.
