Porsche Taycan Sets New Wireless EV Charging Record with 270 kW Power at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
A Porsche Taycan has achieved a new milestone in wireless electric vehicle charging, hitting a rate of 270 kilowatts during a trial conducted by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which falls under the US Department of Energy. This feat is said to be an unprecedented achievement in the wireless power transfer for passenger vehicles.
In a press release, ORNL pointed out that the current wireless charging technology for smaller vehicles operates at significantly lower power. The market-ready equipment typically delivers 11 kw at a 92% efficiency rate, ORNL mentions, with industry norms accommodating up to 20 kw. In a 2020 implementation, a group of Jaguar I-Pace cabs in Oslo, Norway, managed to reach charging speeds of 50 kw during quick 6-8 minute intervals.

Nonetheless, ORNL asserts that its technology, developed through a joint research initiative with Volkswagen Group of America unveiled in 2021, matches the performance of numerous standard DC rapid-charging stations with an efficiency of 95%. Additionally, ORNL contends that it can boost the battery's charge level by 50% within just 10 minutes.
The apparatus employs compact, polyphase electromagnetic coils with a diameter slightly exceeding 19 inches, which, according to Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), enables the system to achieve maximum power concentration. Omer Onar, the principal investigator, mentioned in a press release that the receiver coil located beneath the Taycan boasts a power density that is 8 to 10 times greater than current models. The charging process took place with a separation of 4.75 inches between the vehicle's coils and the surface below.

According to ORNL, this technology has the potential to enable more robust wireless charging without the need for large, cumbersome parts that would be challenging to integrate into consumer vehicles. The lab plans to collaborate further with VW Group of America to advance the system towards a state of readiness for manufacturing, although a specific timeline has not been established.
Currently, a few firms provide proprietary cordless power solutions. Tesla seemed to have acquired a business specializing in this technology, a German company named Wiferion, in 2023, suggesting that the car manufacturer is progressing with its strategy to introduce wireless power options for its cars.
