Perez on Thin Ice: Coulthard’s Warning as Red Bull Faces McLaren Challenge
"Returning to the real world" as the notion that Sergio Perez is nearing his exit emerges
"A single swallow doesn't herald the coming of summer. A solitary positive outcome isn't enough to meet expectations"
David Coulthard is concerned that Sergio Perez might be the next to leave Red Bull, similar to Daniel Ricciardo, if his performance doesn't pick up soon.
Perez has managed to secure just a single point across the last two grand prix events, during which time Red Bull has slipped below McLaren in the standings for the constructors' championship.
A disappointing accident in Azerbaijan, just as he was competing for a top-three finish, was a setback for Perez. However, he managed to secure a lackluster 10th place in the subsequent race in Singapore
"His performance in Baku was outstanding, yet as David Coulthard pointed out on Channel 4, one good moment doesn't define an entire season."
"A single positive outcome isn't the anticipated result. It's evident that he plays the role of the second driver within the squad."
"The sense of relief that followed the Baku event was significant. However, here, it was a return to the usual state of affairs."
"If he fails to secure significant points for the rest of the year, then it appears he's heading towards the exit, much like Daniel Ricciardo."
"Perez might find himself in a similar scenario."
Ricciardo's underperformance with RB this season has led to his replacement by Liam Lawson for the rest of the season.
Perez managed to retain his position through the midpoint and gained further support from Red Bull.
However, with both McLaren drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, consistently leading in each race, Perez's failure to secure points has presented a problem for Red Bull in the constructors' championship.
Max Verstappen's second-place finish in Singapore, trailing behind Norris, provided a bit of relief for Red Bull.
"Coulthard observed that their approach, designed to address last year's challenges, proved ineffective."
"They switched back to an approach that was more within their scope of activity.
Max skillfully managed to achieve a lap that ensured they earned a front-row position. The outcome might have varied if Oscar hadn't faced his challenges.
"However, the timing tells the truth. The positions were fixed. Aiming for second place was the highest they could aspire to."
