Pedro Acosta Joins KTM’s Development Push for 2025: Debuts Three RC16 Prototypes at Misano Test
KTM recruits Pedro Acosta for 2025 project: "Three motorcycles available today"
"This was the first trial where we could fully utilize his skills"
Pedro Acosta had a trio of RC16 motorcycles in his garage during the Misano MotoGP Test, as KTM brought in their future factory rider to assist with development efforts.
Sebastian Risse, the Technical Manager for KTM/GASGAS, mentioned that they were collaborating with Pedro to finalize primary confirmations for 2025 and to identify areas of the bike that needed enhancements.
"We've reached a stage with Pedro where his experience and adaptability allow him to excel. This marks the first opportunity we’ve truly had to utilize his skills for our development."
Acosta, along with his 2025 teammate Brad Binder, made his first appearance on the prototype RC16, which has a new engine, aerodynamic features, and exhaust system created by test riders Pol Espargaro and Dani Pedrosa.
A different tail unit and a new top exhaust were observed on another one of his machines.
The 20-year-old racer, who exited Sunday’s grand prix early due to a crash, made a remarkable impression by securing fourth place on the timesheets, trailing only behind the GP24 trio of Francesco Bagnaia, Franco Morbidelli, and Enea Bastianini.
"I'm really thrilled with the results of the test," Acosta commented. "We experimented with a variety of approaches today, and I'm generally satisfied because many of these innovations are benefiting us this season as well."
“We’ll observe the situation and determine the appropriate time to begin utilizing them.”
"Today, there were three bikes in the box, which is something I haven't seen before. We should be pleased; we made an effort and discovered several things. Let's aim to improve for the next Grand Prix."
Although KTM race riders are unable to alter the engine design throughout the season, they are permitted to make adjustments to the chassis, exhaust, and certain aerodynamic components.
Nicolas Goyon, the manager of the Tech3 team, commented that the majority of the new components have shown positive results and will be usable for the current season.
Acosta's colleague, Augusto Fernandez, who will be departing the team following this season, participated solely in the morning practice. The Spanish racer, who is anticipated to join Yamaha as a test rider next year, recorded the 20th fastest lap time of the day.
"It's unfortunate that we couldn't execute our entire plan this morning because of the wet track," Fernandez mentioned. "However, we're confident about the things we did manage to test. That's a good sign," he added. "It took a while to make adjustments, but now we know the direction we need to head in. Hopefully, the upcoming rounds will reflect the efforts we've put in here." "Augusto concentrated on the rear suspension," Goyon clarified.
The Tech3 team will return to Misano for the Emilia Romagna race, scheduled to take place from September 20-22.
