Pedro Acosta Eyes Catalunya Comeback: From Le Mans Frustration to Home Ground Enthusiasm
Pedro Acosta describes Le Mans experience as 'somewhat frustrating', remains optimistic with 'enthusiasm and clear ideas' for Catalunya.
Acosta aims for a strong comeback in his home race following his initial DNF in MotoGP.
Pedro Acosta, the sole racer to secure points in the first nine races of the season, saw his streak come to a halt due to an early accident as he vied for a top-three finish at the French MotoGP.
The event concluded what was a 'slightly irksome' weekend for the GASGAS Tech3 racer, who believed he possessed the pace necessary to lead the pack yet struggled to advance from tenth to sixth in the Sprint, prior to his premature departure on Sunday.
Following this, Acosta is set to participate in his third consecutive 'home' event, having made his Spanish MotoGP debut in Jerez and competed in Tech3's local Le Mans event, with Catalunya being the next venue.
The Barcelona circuit, known for its minimal grip and significant tyre wear, stands out as one of the rare locations where Acosta didn't achieve a podium finish in either the Moto3 or Moto2 categories. However, he has 'specific plans' for the upcoming weekend.
"Le Mans turned out to be a somewhat disappointing weekend because, as I mentioned, our bike was prepared to take the lead in the race," Acosta stated.
"I'm heading to Montmeló full of excitement and a solid plan, aiming for a strong start on Friday, maintaining momentum into Saturday, and wrapping it up successfully on Sunday.
"Throughout the weekend, we'll explore tire management on a track known for its limited grip. Fortunately, the initial five races have already provided me with some insights into this matter…"
"With that in mind, I'm genuinely excited about the upcoming weekend and eager to witness the crowd of GASGAS fans turning the stands into a sea of red!"
Team leader Nicolas Goyon commented, saying, “Before his unfortunate accident at the start of the main race, he stood out as the sole competitor to have earned points in every sprint and race, marking an impressive achievement for a newcomer!
"Clearly, he was dissatisfied with his accident, yet it's considered a step in the educational journey within the top tier. Pedro is expected to return this week with even greater determination."
The Catalunya Grand Prix also serves as a home event for Augusto Fernandez, a team member who is yet to achieve his season's first top-ten finish.
"Fernandez expressed enthusiasm about traveling to Montmeló this week, mentioning it's a home Grand Prix for him. He reminisced about his successful 2022 Moto2 season, where he ended up on the podium in Barcelona."
"After the Le Mans race, the outcomes didn't meet our expectations, yet there were encouraging aspects as I've improved my comfort and performance on the bike."
"I'm fond of the Barcelona circuit; we performed well there last year, so I'm eager to begin our efforts this Thursday."
"We'll also be competing on GASGAS territory, which has me eager to participate in the race and soak up the vibe of the Catalunya Grand Prix."
