Pedro Acosta Edges Nearer to Maiden MotoGP Victory: Reflects on Indonesian Grand Prix Performance
Pedro Acosta is "nearing his initial victory in MotoGP"
"Without a doubt, the thought was crossing my mind…"
Pedro Acosta feels he is inching ever closer to claiming a victory in MotoGP and admits that the thought of securing his first win during the Indonesian Grand Prix was increasingly on his mind.
In last weekend's Mandalika race, the newcomer from Tech3 secured a third-place start and went on to compete against Jorge Martin for the victory in the 27-lap Grand Prix on Sunday.
During a moment in the race, Acosta reduced the gap to Martin to just 0.6 seconds. However, by the time they reached the finish line, Acosta was 1.4 seconds behind, finishing second. This was after the distance between them had increased to 2.5 seconds in the final laps.
An investigation into tyre pressure after the race put his podium finish at risk. However, he was not penalized because an examination revealed that a damaged wheel rim was the reason for the issue.
Acosta believes he is on the verge of his first victory, having consistently achieved top five speeds on the KTM recently, especially after securing his fourth grand prix podium of the season.
"Indeed, the thought of winning in Indonesia was crossing my mind," he remarked.
"It was a tight call. Perhaps in the future, we should consider strategizing more around FP2 to increase our lap count on the tire, because towards the race's conclusion, I encountered several uncertainties and possibly didn't handle them as effectively as I could have."
"In any case, it's important for us to feel joyful because today we truly excelled."
"Definitely, I've been stating since Thursday that this track suits us and KTM well."
"I'm pleased as I had to complete a race since in the previous two at Misano, where I was competitive, I ended up crashing in both."
"I attempted to overtake him, but there was a point, around laps 16 or 17, when he began to increase the gap. At that moment, I thought 'Alright, perhaps settling for second place today is wiser than ending up in a crash, especially since we required more data."
"It's important for us to feel joyful as we consistently secure positions within the top five and compete against the Ducatis, a task that's far from simple."
"For this reason, it's a cause for joy as we are continuously drawing nearer."
Acosta credits his impressive grand prix performance to enhanced pace at the start of the race, yet he acknowledges the need for improvement in sprint races, after placing sixth in Indonesia on Saturday.
"He further pointed out that our most challenging moment comes at the start of the races."
"In this instance, my goal was to respond more quickly during the initial laps."
"In an effort to stay competitive, I attempted to overtake [Enea] Bastianini early on and keep pace with Martin, as ultimately, that's what sustains your career in MotoGP."
"It's important for us to feel content; throughout the weekend, we demonstrated considerable strength, even proving our capability for speed in a single lap."
"Typically, this is where we struggle the most. We have to enhance our performance in the sprint race since the capability we observed didn't match what we expected [in the grand prix]."
"We have to increase our speed in this situation since it's the only component lacking. We've now achieved the consistency required to remain among the top five."
Following the grand prix, Acosta commended Tech3 and KTM for their role in his podium finish, asserting that they are more worthy of the accolades than himself.
"Without a doubt, both the team and the factory have earned this outcome," he stated.
"They're putting in an immense effort to elevate this bike to the highest standard, and we're steadily making progress."
"Gratitude to the entire testing team, including Dani and Pol, and to everyone at the factory who's putting in significant effort to provide us with fresh innovations."
"Additionally, a huge thank you goes out to every team member present on the track, dedicating their entire being to this endeavor. We're making significant progress, and I believe they merit more recognition than I do."
