Pedro Acosta and MotoGP Stars Voice Concerns Over Helmet Radios: ‘The Head is Something Important
Pedro Acosta: Radios in MotoGP? “The mind is crucial”
Pedro Acosta: “Additionally, I’m not a fan of having cameras in the racing suits. Sure, if you break a collarbone, you can fix it with a plate. But the mind is crucial.”
Newcomer Pedro Acosta is one of the riders opposing the potential implementation of helmet radios in MotoGP.
Beyond the belief that cyclists should be allowed to decide for themselves and the difficulties in ensuring clear communication, the Spaniard is also worried about the safety implications of having equipment inside the helmet.
"I’m not really a big believer in those things. I prefer spending time alone and reflecting on my own thoughts," Acosta stated. "Plus, our minds are always active, and just like a phone that loses signal when moved too fast, we can get disconnected."
"I'm not a fan of it and I don't have much faith in it. I gave it a shot in Qatar…"
"Ultimately, if it's within the helmet, you can speak freely, but if anything makes contact with your head, and if an incident occurs, there will always be doubt about whether it was caused by something inside the helmet."
Furthermore, I don't support the idea of having cameras in the leather suit. However, if you break a collarbone, you get it fixed with a plate. The head, on the other hand, is crucial.
“When I observe the setup in Formula 1, they use an earpiece with a cable. However, the device we were experimenting with has a component that vibrates behind the ear and makes contact with the bone.”
Informed that his soon-to-retire friend Aleix Espargaro, an avid radio enthusiast, had once more contributed to the system's development during Monday's Misano test, Acosta joked, “Yeah, because he goes home!”
Current world champion Francesco Bagnaia expressed that he would prefer to incur a weekly fine, similar to Michael Jordan, rather than use a radio.
Nonetheless, although there is ongoing debate about two-way communication, the majority of riders support a one-way system from Race Direction to the riders for critical safety alerts.
