Pecco Bagnaia Apologizes to Alex Marquez for Post-Race Accusations: ‘I Didn’t Mean He Crashed Me on Purpose
Pecco Bagnaia issues an apology: “I apologize to Alex Marquez for my harsh comments.”
"I didn't mean to suggest that he caused my crash intentionally."
Francesco Bagnaia has issued a public apology to Alex Marquez for accusing the Gresini rider of intentionally colliding with him during the Aragon MotoGP.
During last Sunday's race at Aragon, Bagnaia and the younger Marquez brother crashed into each other at Turn 13 on the 18th lap out of 23 while competing for third place.
The stewards classified the incident as a racing accident, but each rider held the other responsible for the crash.
Bagnaia claims that Marquez intentionally collided with him and asserts that data from his motorcycle supports this allegation.
Marquez denied this allegation on social media, and both riders resolved their differences in a private discussion on Sunday evening at Aragon.
Prior to the San Marino Grand Prix this weekend, Bagnaia issued an apology on Thursday for his earlier accusation against Marquez, although he maintains that the Gresini rider was responsible for the incident.
Bagnaia apologized to Alex for his harsh comments made during the post-race interviews.
"I felt extremely upset about what occurred, and reviewing the telemetry data only intensified my frustration."
"However, I admit that my words were a bit harsh. I didn't mean to imply that he intentionally caused me to crash."
"His defense was somewhat forceful, which is typical when competing for a spot on the podium."
"I haven't changed my opinion on the incident because I have my own perspective. However, I do regret the words I used about him and apologize to Alex for that."
"Occasionally, anger can cause you to say things you don't truly mean. That's my perspective on the matter."
"He visited our office to apologize for the incident, and that was the extent of his visit. We are two individuals with distinct perspectives."
“It’s considerate, but definitely the same level of ambition at an inappropriate time.”
Bagnaia faced significant consequences for the incident, as it resulted in him trailing by 23 points behind Jorge Martin in the championship standings after leaving Aragon.
Bagnaia's health status
Following the incident, both riders escaped without major injuries. However, Bagnaia has acknowledged that he is not in peak physical condition as he arrives in Misano for the first of two races scheduled at the circuit this month.
"I'm not in peak physical condition," he mentioned.
"I'm experiencing significant pain in my shoulder, collarbone, and neck. Nonetheless, we will make an effort to be prepared."
"This is my home race and it’s always amazing to compete in front of all the fans here."
"I travel a million kilometers annually here, ensuring I'm prepared for any situation."
Elaborating on the constraints of his physical condition, Bagnaia mentioned, "I don't feel capable of moving my body the way I would like to."
“But that’s to be expected. The force was significant, and I had 170 kilograms weighing down on me. Plus, the crash onto the gravel was pretty hard.”
"Fortunately, I didn't break any bones, but my muscles and ligaments are somewhat strained."
