Pastor Maldonado Returns to Track for Pirelli’s 2017 Tyre Testing After Renault Setback
Maldonado returns to racing with Pirelli test sessions
Ex-Williams and Lotus driver Pastor Maldonado is once again driving a race car, selected by Pirelli to participate in initial tyre tests for the 2017 season.
Pastor Maldonado, who secured a victory in Formula 1 for Williams at the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix, had initially agreed to compete with the reestablished Renault team. However, he was let go in January after it became evident that the crucial financial support from the financially troubled Venezuelan state-owned oil company PDVSA would not be arriving.
According to reports from Motorsport.com, Maldonado is still on the lookout for a new driving opportunity. In the meantime, he has been invited to participate in private testing sessions, where he has supposedly driven a GP2 car equipped with preliminary 2017 prototype tires.
Last month, an Italian company received approval to conduct extra testing days during the racing season in 2016. This decision aims to help the firm get ready for significant technical regulation changes planned for 2017.
It will be permitted to utilize cars from the 2013 and 2014 specifications for the initial phase of the program, before transitioning to upgraded 2015 models.
