Pastor Maldonado Joins Pirelli for 2017 Tyre Testing After F1 Hiatus
Maldonado returns to the track for Pirelli test drives
Ex-Williams and Lotus racer Pastor Maldonado has returned to racing, being selected by Pirelli for initial tyre testing for 2017.
Maldonado, who secured a victory in Formula 1 with the Williams team during the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix, initially joined the revamped Renault team as a racer. However, he was let go in January after it was evident that the essential support from the financially troubled Venezuelan state-owned oil company PDVSA would not materialize.
Maldonado, who has not secured a driving position elsewhere, has been recruited, as per Motorsport.com, to assist in private testing efforts and is said to have piloted a GP2 vehicle equipped with preliminary prototype tires for 2017.
Last month, the Italian company received approval for extra test days during the season in 2016, aimed at enhancing its preparedness for 2017 when significant technical regulatory changes are expected to be implemented.
Additionally, the utilization of vehicles conforming to the 2013 and 2014 specifications will be permitted to support the early stages of its program, prior to transitioning to upgraded 2015 models.
