Northwest Leads the Charge: How EV Owners in the US Are Saving Big on Fuel Costs
In which parts of the US do electric vehicles offer the most significant fuel savings compared to traditional gasoline vehicles?
The cost of operating vehicles with traditional engines can be up to six times higher than electric vehicles due to the volatile nature of gasoline prices, though the extent of savings may differ across various regions in the nation.
According to the Department of Energy (DOE), electric vehicle (EV) owners in the Northwest region of the United States reap the greatest financial benefits when compared to the expenses of operating gasoline-powered vehicles. This conclusion stems from research conducted by Argonne National Laboratory, which calculated the potential savings of switching from a gasoline car to a comparably sized electric car. The study incorporated detailed data on the cost of electricity and the price of gasoline at the local level, factoring in individual ZIP codes.
Potential savings on fuel costs by state when transitioning to electric vehicles, according to the Department of Energy.
Idaho and Washington State exhibited the highest potential for cost savings, surpassing $0.14 for every mile. California and Alaska followed suit with significant savings, while states in the Southern and Northeastern regions generally displayed a lesser potential for cost reduction.
The Department of Energy (DOE) suggests that the Northwest experienced greater possible savings due to the mix of low costs for electricity and steep prices for gas. This area also has a significant number of big pickup trucks, which, as previously noted by the DOE, stand to benefit the most from transitioning to electric vehicles. Since larger vehicles use up more fuel, the switch to electric translates to more substantial savings.

Transitioning from fuel-intensive vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) is set to significantly reduce both the consumption of fossil fuels and carbon emissions in the near future. According to a May report from consultancy firm Wood Mackenzie, the increasing sales of EVs are projected to cut the worldwide demand for gasoline by 50% by the year 2024.
Reduced electrical expenses in contrast to gas costs can play a role in the overall affordability of electric vehicles, yet this is just one aspect to consider. The upfront cost to buy an electric vehicle typically surpasses that of traditional petrol-powered cars, but this difference could diminish in the near future due to an excess of lithium. Moreover, insuring an electric vehicle often costs more than insuring a similar petrol vehicle.
