**Nico Rosberg Critiques McLaren’s Team Strategy: Claims Equal Treatment Hurts Lando Norris While Boosting Oscar Piastri**
Nico Rosberg's opinion on the McLaren team orders controversy
Analysis of the Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri clash by Nico Rosberg
Nico Rosberg asserts that McLaren's choice to allow their drivers to compete against each other is "harming" Lando Norris.
However, he maintained that Charles Leclerc’s victory at the Italian Grand Prix in Formula 1 was not necessarily a result of the choices made by McLaren's leadership.
Norris began the race from pole position but was quickly passed by his teammate Oscar Piastri during the opening lap, which put him at a disadvantage. He was unable to regain his position and lost the opportunity to make a significant impact on Max Verstappen's standing in the drivers' championship.
Former Formula 1 champion Rosberg discussed McLaren's approach of treating their drivers equally during an analysis for Sky Sports.
“Papaya rules apply, but compete with fairness,” Rosberg stated.
Sources indicate that Lando believed Oscar crossed the line during their contest at Turn 4. He felt it wasn't a fair and square fight.
“Intense debates are expected within the McLaren team’s motorhome.
"It's really challenging to handle. It's a delicate balance. You can put those guidelines in writing, but did Oscar exceed the boundaries set by the Papaya rules?"
“Oscar performed excellently. He vacated the area and executed his tasks superbly.”
Andrea Stella, the McLaren team principal, previously worked at Ferrari during the time when Michael Schumacher was the clear top driver.
However, according to Rosberg, he is not the one responsible for McLaren’s intriguing approach of treating both drivers the same.
"This approach originates from the highest level of leadership. It is driven by Zak Brown," he stated.
"We have two primary drivers, which is fundamental to McLaren's long-standing philosophy. Andrea is implementing this strategy."
“They were confident in their victory until the final moments.
The team allowed their drivers to compete against each other, making the race thrilling and enjoyable. Ultimately, Ferrari took a gamble with their strategy, which proved to be successful.
The issue at hand involves Lando and the drivers' championship. The team has chosen to maintain both drivers as equals, not giving Lando any preferential treatment. While this is their decision, it is clearly having a negative impact on Lando.
Do McLaren play it safe?
Norris trails Verstappen by 62 points, even though Verstappen tops the drivers' standings despite experiencing a rough patch.
Karun Chandhok mentioned that to compete for the drivers’ championship, every point must be awarded to Lando.
"Conversely, they've allowed the drivers to compete, which benefits Oscar. He performed exceptionally well, being the quickest McLaren driver today."
"In the long run, it's more advantageous to have Oscar as an ally."
Rosberg commented, “Lando has been performing exceptionally. His driving skills are impressive, and his confidence is soaring.”
"It's encouraging that he senses 'I have an opportunity.' He remains the less favored contender."
"Lando made an error at Turn 4. He was on the inside and had the situation under control but acted too cautiously."
Is McLaren overly cautious when it comes to taking chances?
In response, Rosberg commented: "Were they too cautious? It's hard to determine. Today's outcome was unexpected. No one could have foreseen that Ferrari's strategy would succeed. Based on today's events, I wouldn't call it that."
"Concerned about taking risks? They allow their drivers to battle intensely! They raced side by side, and Lando nearly lost control while competing with Oscar."
Rosberg asserted that the McLarens' skirmish on the first lap didn't cause them to lose the race.
"Not really. Oscar had an amazing race. They maximized the performance of the car today," he stated.
