Niccolo Canepa: Chasing One Final World Title in Farewell Bol d’Or 24-Hour Race
Former MotoGP racer Niccolo Canepa aims for a last world championship before retiring
Niccolo Canepa, a former MotoGP competitor, gets ready for his final race as a professional at the challenging 24-hour Bol d'Or EWC event with YART before ending his career.
Ex-MotoGP racer Niccolo Canepa approaches the last race of the 2024 Endurance World Championship with a unique opportunity to end his professional racing career as a World Champion.
In a recent announcement, the 36-year-old revealed that this weekend's Bol d’Or 24-hour race at Paul Ricard will mark his last appearance with the Yamaha Austria Racing Team (YART), concluding an international career that has lasted nearly two decades.
During his career, Canepa has raced at the top tiers of MotoGP with Pramac Ducati in 2009, as well as in WorldSBK and EWC. Additionally, he has taken part in Moto2, MotoE, and BSB competitions.
This weekend, Canepa partners with YART teammates Marvin Fritz and Karel Hanika to defend their championship lead, potentially concluding the season as World Champion.
"This Bol d’Or will be incredibly emotional for me since it marks the final race of my career. It’s going to be a unique experience. Nevertheless, I am completely focused on the championship. We are currently at the top of the overall rankings, and our goal is to win consecutive titles and retain the #1 spot for the next year as well."
"Our primary objective is clear. Throughout the season, we have demonstrated our strength. The bike's performance has been outstanding, and my teammates have been exceptional. We aim to maintain this momentum and avoid any distractions."
"I am now fully recovered physically, which is a big improvement from the beginning of the season when I was dealing with injuries from my Daytona accident. I am prepared to compete fiercely until the very end."
"My goal is to conclude my career on a high note, not just for myself, but also for the entire YART team, by securing another championship victory with them."
YART is approaching the 24-hour race finale with a narrow six-point lead over the Suzuki Endurance Racing Team, which includes riders Gregg Black, Erwan Masson, and Dan Linfoot. In 2023, the Italian-Austrian-Czech team clinched the Endurance World Championship title with YART.
Niccolò Canepa, who has also worked as a test rider for Yamaha, achieved his highest finish in MotoGP with Pramac Ducati, securing ninth place. Additionally, he earned a podium finish in MotoE. In the World Superbike Championship, Canepa competed for Ducati, Kawasaki, and Erik Buell Racing.
