Sir Keir Starmer has characterized his inaugural visit to Ireland as an opportunity to "reset" the relationship between the UK and its nearest neighbor.
He visited Farmleigh House in Dublin on Saturday, where he was welcomed by Irish Taoiseach Simon Harris. This marked his distinction as the first British prime minister to travel to the Republic of Ireland in five years.
Following Labour's electoral win in July, Mr. Harris was the inaugural global leader to be received by Sir Keir at Downing Street.
In an afternoon meeting, both heads of state talked about establishing a yearly summit focused on trade and cooperation between Ireland and the United Kingdom.
They confirmed that the themes and format for the initial summit in March 2025 have been set, with plans to hold it annually from that point on.
"Trade between our nations is extensive, which underscores the significance of our relationship," Sir Keir noted.
"The interconnectedness of our economy and markets has a long-standing history. Therefore, I believe the base for this reset is solid."

The Irish leader characterized the prime minister's visit as a "truly significant honor" and noted that the time shared thus far was "greatly valued."
He said that both men "are eager to significantly improve British-Irish relations."
Sir Keir responded, "I'm delighted to be here and to embrace this chance to rejuvenate the bond between our nations. This fresh start has the potential to be significant and profound."
During his inaugural trip as prime minister, the main focus was on trade between Great Britain and Ireland, a partnership valued at €100 billion (£84 billion) annually, which sustains thousands of employment opportunities.
Sir Keir expressed his intention to pursue a broader reset in relations with the EU, engaging with various leaders across the bloc. He aims to foster a closer connection with the EU, building on his recent trips to Berlin and Paris.
He discussed the significance of minimizing obstacles for UK and Irish businesses after Brexit and emphasized the need for collaboration in defense and security.
The global disputes in Ukraine and the Middle East are also expected to be topics of conversation. This follows a demonstration by activists in Dublin's city center on Saturday, protesting against the UK's arms trade with Israel.
Over the weekend, the two leaders are scheduled to engage with several Irish companies such as Accenture, Keelings, and Primark, aiming to boost trade and investment opportunities.
Jersey exchange before Ireland match
At Farmleigh House, Freddie Munnelly, a nine-year-old who underwent medical care in the UK, gifted the two leaders with football scarves from Ireland and England.
The prime minister received an Irish football jersey personalized with his name, and in exchange, the Taoiseach was gifted an England football shirt, also personalized with his name.
The pair is set to be present at the England versus Ireland Nations League soccer game taking place tonight at Dublin's Aviva Stadium.
Sir Keir remarked, "It's going to show up in my nine-a-side game. I'll be wearing it with pride in north London pretty soon."
Following a call from someone in the crowd asking if they could get Declan Rice back, Sir Keir responded: "No, definitely not. He's outstanding."
