Misano Mayhem: Enea Bastianini Defends Controversial Overtake on Jorge Martin Amidst Heated Debate
Enea Bastianini explains what caused him to go off the track while passing Jorge Martin.
Enea Bastianini, Jorge Martin, and Marc Marquez address the controversy at Misano.
Enea Bastianini has provided an explanation for veering off the track during his contentious last-lap maneuver to overtake Jorge Martin at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in MotoGP.
Factory Ducati rider Bastianini's overtaking move on Martin at Turn 4 during the last lap to take the lead in Sunday's race at Misano has sparked intense discussion.
Bastianini maneuvered his Ducati to the inside of Pramac racer Martin, causing minor contact between the two. This resulted in Martin veering significantly off track, and Bastianini also going beyond the curb.
The officials did not take any steps regarding the incident, although they reportedly investigated it. Nevertheless, they have not yet made any public statements about this.
The issue divided opinions, as some riders believed that Bastianini going off track meant he should have been required to relinquish his position.
As the Indonesian Grand Prix approaches this weekend, the winner of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix mentioned that he would have successfully navigated the corner if he hadn't glanced to check whether Martin had crashed.
When asked if the reaction to his overtaking maneuver surprised him, he replied that it didn't. He explained that he veered off course because he turned his head to check on Jorge, having noticed indications of a potential crash.
"I initially believed he had an accident, but it turned out he had just veered off course. Despite that incident, I maintained my position and still think my initial judgment was accurate."
The championship leader Martin remains steadfast in his view regarding the incident, although he “respects the stewards’ decision.”
"In my opinion, discussing the past serves no purpose," he stated.
"I'm not in complete agreement because I believe it went too far. However, I have to honor the stewards' ruling. Congratulations to Enea, and I'll make my attempt here."
Last Sunday, Marc Marquez was the most prominent figure demanding a penalty for Bastianini. When questioned again on Thursday in Lombok, he indicated that his stance remained unchanged.
The Gresini rider stated, "I had no part in it. I've already shared my views."
