Michelin Unveils Harder Front Tyres for Misano MotoGP: A Strategic Shift in Response to 2024 Bike Performance
Michelin Commits to Change: Stiffer Front Tires for Misano MotoGP
"We had considered implementing these adjustments since the previous year, and the data gathered from the beginning of the 2024 season has persuaded us to move forward."
Due to the improved performance of machines, Michelin has made the three front tyre rubber compounds harder for this weekend's Misano MotoGP.
The rear specifications from Misano 2023 will still be in use.
Unlike the recently introduced track surface at Aragon, the asphalt at Misano is familiar to riders due to regular private MotoGP testing sessions and the annual San Marino Grand Prix, which has been taking place since 2007.
Michelin has decided to provide a harder front tire option this weekend due to their extensive understanding of the track and the analysis of long-term data collected here.
“We had been considering these modifications since the previous year, and the data collected from the beginning of the 2024 season persuaded us to go ahead and opt for tougher rubber compounds for the front tires,” stated Piero Taramasso, Michelin’s manager for two-wheel racing.
Last season, the tires we used were a perfect fit, allowing us to shatter all previous records. However, considering the upgraded performance of the 2024 bikes and their frequent recent enhancements, we understand that our partners now require slightly different tires, particularly for the front.
"This is the reason we decided to take this step, aiming to provide riders with more reliable performance and an improved experience."
Misano is a relatively level and technical circuit that challenges the tires due to its mix of slow and fast turns. Certain sections, like the Tramonto hairpin and the high-speed Curvone right-hander, put considerable pressure on the tires.
"It is understood that using harder rubber compounds for the front, paired with a rear tyre compound that effectively delivers power to the track, will result in the ideal tyre mix for superior performance."
This month, MotoGP is set to host two race weekends at the Misano circuit, along with an official testing session scheduled for next Monday.
