Michele Pirro Clinches Seventh CIV Superbike Title Amidst Stellar Season
Michele Pirro clinches his seventh Italian Superbike championship
Ducati MotoGP test rider Michele Pirro has added another CIV Italian Superbike crown to his collection.
Michele Pirro, who serves as the official test rider for Ducati Corse’s MotoGP and WorldSBK teams, has secured his seventh title in the CIV Italian Superbike Championship.
Michele Pirro, competing for the Barni Ducati team which also features Danilo Petrucci in the World Superbike Championship (WorldSBK) and Yari Montella in the World Supersport Championship (WorldSSP), secured the championship title last weekend at Mugello.
Pirro captured his seventh championship in the CIV Superbike category, adding to his previous victories in 2015, 2016 through 2019, and 2021 to 2022. This achievement marks his 10th overall title in the CIV series, which also includes championships in the Superstock 1000 in 2007 and 2008, and a Supersport title in 2009.
This count positions Pirro as the third-highest on the all-time list of CIV championship titles, trailing Tarquinio Provini, who has 11 titles, and Giacomo Agostini, who tops the list with 16 titles, including an impressive streak of 10 consecutive 500cc championships from 1968 to 1977.
The title follows a contentious conclusion to the 2023 CIV Superbike season at Imola last year. During the race, Lorenzo Zanetti, who was competing against Pirro for the championship, collided with Pirro in the Variante Bassa section. This incident caused Pirro, now a seven-time Superbike Champion, to crash, ultimately allowing Zanetti to clinch the title.
Zanetti chose not to compete for his CIV title this year, opting instead to participate in the IDM German Superbike Championship. He began his IDM season with a victory in the opening race at the Sachsenring, but his only other podium finish came in the second race of the latest round at the Nurburgring. In the interim, most of the wins have been secured by Ilya Mikhalchik, who has clinched his fourth IDM Superbike championship this year.
The period without Zanetti has matched up with a remarkable season for Pirro. Over the course of five rounds, Pirro, bearing the number 51, has secured victories in seven out of ten races. Alessandro Delbianco claimed the win when Pirro was unable to complete Race 1 during the initial Mugello round and when Pirro finished fourth in Race 2 at the second Misano round. Luca Bernardi emerged victorious in Race 2 at Mugello last weekend, where Pirro also clinched the championship title.
The concluding event of the 2024 CIV Superbike championship is scheduled to be held at Imola from September 27 to 29.
