Mercedes Faces Scrutiny Over Delay in Naming Lewis Hamilton’s Successor Amid Questions of Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s Readiness
“Error” query raised as Mercedes postpones announcing Lewis Hamilton's successor
Discussion on whether Andrea Kimi Antonelli is prepared to step into Hamilton's role
It has been proposed that assessing Mercedes' decisions is challenging due to the lack of transparency regarding Andrea Kimi Antonelli's actual capabilities.
Antonelli has emerged as the leading candidate to take over for Lewis Hamilton, who will be joining Ferrari next year, in the Mercedes F1 team.
Carlos Sainz's move to Williams has ruled him out as a minor option and has cleared the path for Antonelli, the promising young driver currently in his first F2 season.
Antonelli has also driven a Mercedes, but his skill level with the car is still uncertain.
Bernie Collins mentioned on the Sky F1 podcast that they are unable to observe the testing process, so they are unsure about its effectiveness.
"You can't evaluate the outcomes of other series in isolation due to variations in car and team performance. It's quite challenging to make an accurate assessment. However, there has been a noticeable improvement in results."
"I found it intriguing that he mentioned he might not be prepared personally, which is quite unusual for a driver. Typically, these individuals have confidence that exceeds our expectations!"
Antonelli secured his second victory in the F2 series in Hungary and confessed, "To be honest, I don't know if I'll be prepared. I'm still gaining a lot of experience in F2."
"I continue to make numerous errors, and I haven't yet mastered the crucial details. I just want to be truthful."
Ferrari's approach to nurturing young talent
Collins mentioned: “Another intriguing factor is how George made his way into Mercedes via Williams, a team that continues to use their gearbox and engine.
"James Vowles might have internally decided that they don't want to be seen as a junior team and aim to establish their own identity. This would have made it easier for Antonelli to transition first through Williams and then to Mercedes the following year."
Everyone was amazed by Oliver Bearman's performance in Jeddah; he did an outstanding job driving for Ferrari.
"It might have been more secure for Ferrari to choose either Nico Hulkenberg or Kevin Magnussen from their associated team, Haas, if you consider it in that context."
“Bearman is set to join Haas next year.”
"It's fascinating to see how Mercedes and Ferrari have approached integrating younger drivers into their teams in distinct ways."
Craig Slater mentioned that he believes Mercedes has no other choice but to go with Antonelli.
