Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed Concept Unveiled: A Glimpse into the Exclusive Future of the Mythos Series
Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed Concept: An Extreme Precursor
No windows, no roof, but with an F1-HALO – The Mythos line casts its first giant shadow…
The press release from Mercedes-AMG regarding the unveiling of the PureSpeed promises nothing less than the "pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz exclusivity in the high-end market." This concept car, offering a glimpse into the first mass-produced model of the "Mythos" series, easily meets this claim with its extreme design, echoes of iconic racecars, stringent production limitations, and the anticipated steep price tag.
The appearance doesn't come across as exceptionally innovative: It's as if a blend of the Mercedes SLR "Stirling Moss", a touch of the Mercedes-AMG One, and a substantial dash of Formula 1 essence were combined atop the foundation of the SL to conceive the design formula for the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed.

During the Formula 1 race in Monaco, the team from Affalterbach unveiled a radical design for a fully open, two-seater performance vehicle without a roof or windshield, intended as a tribute to racing heritage. This concept car offers a glimpse into the inaugural model of the highly exclusive Mercedes-Benz Mythos series.
A limited run of just 250 units is planned for production, which likely means, as has been the case with numerous other exclusive limited editions, that the vehicle will predominantly end up with speculators and collectors. It's a bit of a pity because the PureSpeed is expected to deliver tremendous driving enjoyment, although Mercedes-AMG has not disclosed any specifics about the powertrain. Nonetheless, this extreme SL model should prove to be highly profitable for the company.
One of the standout features is the HALO system, which serves as a replacement for the traditional A-pillar in the vehicle. This component is taken straight from the pinnacle of motor racing and has been a mandatory feature on all Formula 1 cars since 2018. Its purpose is to safeguard the driver's head in the event of an accident. The term "HALO" translates to "halo." Additionally, there are two aerodynamically enhanced helmets, crafted specifically for the Concept Mercedes AMG PureSpeed.
The occupants are not separated from the surroundings by either a roof, windshield, or side windows. (Owners of a Caterham or Renault Sport Spider would be familiar with this sensation…) The interior stands out with a unique color scheme and fittings, along with a custom-designed clock by IWC Schaffhausen positioned on the dashboard.
Upcoming Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed Model (2024)
According to AMG, the design of the hypercar Mercedes-AMG ONE is influenced by the brand. Additionally, the "Stirling Moss" edition of the iconic Mercedes SLR has clearly played a significant role in its design inspiration.
Further insights into the standard AMG SL:
The wheel design features carbon fiber covers on both the front and rear axles. The rear covers are entirely enclosed, enhancing the car's aerodynamics. In contrast, the front covers are open, which helps with airflow around the front of the car, cooling the brakes, and maximizing downforce. A hallmark of a sports car, it boasts an extended hood and a front section that sits low, complete with a distinctive shark nose feature.
The production model anticipated for release next year is likely to closely mirror this concept. Both pricing and technical specifications remain undisclosed.
