McLaren’s Norris vs. Red Bull’s Verstappen: A High-Stakes Duel Poised to End in Tears, Says Zak Brown
Direct clash between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen might 'result in disappointment'
Who would emerge victorious in a direct clash between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen?
McLaren's chief executive, Zak Brown, supports Lando Norris in a direct competition with Max Verstappen, though he believes "several races would likely conclude with disappointment."
After a lengthy wait of 110 races, Norris seized his first Formula 1 win at the Miami Grand Prix, taking advantage of a well-timed Safety Car intervention and then extending his lead over Red Bull's Verstappen in the last 25 laps.
The McLaren racer seemed to possess the speed needed to compete with Verstappen before the Safety Car was deployed, and Norris' display has sparked optimism that he could consistently contend throughout the rest of the season.
McLaren chief Brown is fully convinced that Norris possesses the capability to outperform Verstappen when directly competing against him.
"Brown expressed to Motorsport.com at the 2024 Historic Monaco Grand Prix that he believes Lando has what it takes to outperform Max in a direct competition."
"I believe it would be a spectacular battle, likely resulting in emotional outcomes, whether it's for one side, the other, or possibly both."
"However, in terms of pure skill, I haven't encountered anyone quicker than Lando."
"I believe Max is equally speedy, although there might be some who contest this view. In the end, the truth will only be revealed when they compete in identical vehicles."
Based on my observations of Lando, it appears to me that there isn't a racing driver out there who is quicker.
"The thrilling aspect is that Oscar [Piastri] has the potential to be on par with him. With additional experience, it's anticipated that he'll be able to do so with increasing frequency."
Brown believes that Norris' recent victory will ease his nerves and boost his self-assurance, especially since the British driver has now overcome the frustration from his narrowly missed win in Sochi in 2021.
"Absolutely," Brown stated. "There's a unique aspect to drivers achieving their initial victory.
Reflecting on my initial victory, it becomes evident that securing that first win eases the pressure on drivers, allowing them to not exert themselves excessively. In any endeavor, overexertion can actually be counterproductive.
