McLaren Evaluates High-Voltage Future: Signs Option for Formula E Entry in 2022-23 Season
McLaren Racing has secured an opportunity to join the FIA Formula E championship starting in the 2022-23 season, aligning with the commencement of the Gen3 era.
In its continuous review of possible new racing platforms, McLaren will dedicate the remainder of 2021 to assess the feasibility of participating before making a final decision on whether to enter Formula E for its ninth season.
Currently, McLaren faces a restriction that prevents it from participating in Formula E competitions due to McLaren Applied being the official supplier of batteries for the series. However, this limitation will be removed once their contract concludes at the end of the eighth season, paving the way for a possible entry into the series.
Following the exit of Audi and BMW from Formula E after the 2021 season, two spots have opened up for the 2022-23 season, coinciding with the debut of the Gen3 vehicle and the implementation of a spending limit.
Through entering into an option agreement with Formula E, McLaren has secured a spot on the starting lineup should they choose to move forward.
"McLaren Racing's CEO, Zak Brown, shared that they have been meticulously tracking Formula E, keeping an eye on its development and where it's headed."
"The chance to secure a spot, combined with the conclusion of our agreement to supply McLaren Applied technology to the FIA at the close of Gen 2, provides us with the essential timeframe to evaluate whether Formula E aligns with McLaren's vision for a prospective racing platform."
In addition to its Formula 1 operations, McLaren expanded its racing activities in 2020 by participating full-time in IndyCar and has also evaluated the possibility of competing in the World Endurance Championship and IMSA.
"McLaren Racing's decision to secure an option to enter the Formula E circuit starting with Gen3 is a clear indication of our sport's growing influence," said Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E.
"We are excited that McLaren Racing is exploring the possibility of joining Formula E, a competition that already boasts some of the biggest names in motorsport."
