McLaren CEO Zak Brown Weighs In on Red Bull’s Driver Dilemma Amid McLaren’s Stellar Season
McLaren's chief comments on the "driver issues" encountered by Red Bull
"They are in a position where they manage two teams and have a youth driver development scheme"
Zak Brown is relieved that he doesn't have to handle the challenges Red Bull is experiencing with Sergio Perez.
In a significant decision, Red Bull has chosen to continue supporting Perez despite his lackluster performance in the latter part of the season.
On the other hand, McLaren, a competitor of Red Bull, boasts two top performers in Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
McLaren's CEO described Red Bull's choice to retain Perez as a challenging decision in an interview with Sky Sports.
"They are currently in a position where they have two teams and a development program for young drivers."
"They're currently in a scenario where one driver is at the top of the championship standings, while another is in seventh place. He's an excellent driver and has secured victories before. We all recognize that he can win at any given moment."
"He appears to be facing a problem right now. I'm not fully aware of the details."
"They need to figure it out themselves. I'm glad I don't have any issues with drivers…"
This season, both McLaren drivers have secured grand prix victories, with Norris winning in Miami and Piastri triumphing in Hungary.
In addition to Mercedes, they are the closest competitors to Red Bull, whose top position in the constructors' championship is at risk.
Brown aims for McLaren to be a top contender for both championships in 2025: "That's our goal."
"Despite that, we're aware of how fast this sport progresses."
"We're planning improvements, but our rivals are doing the same. I don't see any reason why we can't lead in every race."
He summarized McLaren's outstanding performance so far this year, saying, "It's definitely a great feeling. The drivers, team, everyone has done an excellent job."
"Securing ten consecutive podium finishes is truly impressive. It's exciting to be in the running for both the drivers' and manufacturers' championships as we head into the summer break."
"There is much to be done since the leading four teams constantly change positions between first, fourth, and second place…"
“I’m extremely pleased with all the achievements at McLaren.”
Lando Norris holds the second position in the drivers’ championship, trailing Max Verstappen by 78 points. In the constructors’ standings, McLaren ranks third, 64 points behind the leading team, Red Bull.
"Both are important," emphasized Brown. "For us to secure the constructors' championship, we need both of our drivers to achieve the highest possible positions."
McLaren's sole setback occurred during Piastri's inaugural Formula 1 race victory.
Following several laps marked by tension, Norris eventually permitted his teammate to overtake, which occurred after a dispute over team orders.
In the grand scheme of things, Norris and Piastri have both achieved victories this year.
Brown commented on the success of both drivers, highlighting that they have each secured victories and consistently race with the team's interests in mind, praising them as exceptional.
“In 2021, we secured the top two positions, with Lando coming in just behind Daniel. We always compete as a team, and our drivers are our key advantage.”
He commented, "Achieving ten consecutive podium finishes is quite impressive. Both drivers have secured victories, and we are currently second in the drivers' championship."
"Nevertheless, we acknowledge that we're not flawless. We've made mistakes throughout the season, but we'll take those lessons to heart and strive to get better."
