Mazda CX-5’s Electrifying Future: Hybrid Model Confirmed for Next Generation Amid Expanding SUV Lineup
Confirmed: Next Mazda CX-5 to Feature Hybrid Technology
Release date for the third iteration remains uncertain
The Mazda CX-5 enjoys global popularity: As Mazda's top-selling vehicle in North America last year, it saw 153,808 units sold. In Germany, it achieved an impressive 11,524 new registrations in 2023, despite the compact crossover being on the market since 2017 and showing its age.
Mazda has officially confirmed the launch of a new CX-5 model. The reveal was made quietly through a document associated with the company's financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024.

Mazda has disclosed only one additional detail about their third-generation model, which is the inclusion of an in-house developed hybrid powertrain. The Japanese automaker has yet to specify whether this will be a conventional hybrid or a plug-in hybrid.
It's worth noting that the company has tapped into Toyota's hybrid expertise for several models. In China, there's a CX-50 that features the powertrain of the Toyota RAV4. Mazda also reveals in the same document that a hybrid version of the CX-50 is scheduled for release in other markets in the latter half of 2024.
When the CX-50 was released in the United States in 2022, there was speculation about whether the CX-5 would be retired. However, it appears that both models will coexist without issue. This is logical, given that last year in North America, the CX-5's popularity nearly quadrupled that of the CX-50.
Nonetheless, it's hard not to observe the expanding range of SUVs from the company. In Europe, the lineup now includes the CX-30 and CX-5, as well as the newly introduced CX-60 and CX-80. These latter models are built on a fresh platform that features rear-wheel drive and robust inline-six engines, with diesel options among them. Despite the mention of the appealing electric Mazda 6 in the document, it's disappointing to note that it will only be available for sale in China, where a plug-in hybrid version will also be offered.
Additional News from Mazda:
What's on the horizon? Mazda has announced plans to debut its inaugural electric vehicle built on a proprietary platform in 2027, with a widespread rollout of electric vehicles slated for the period from 2028 to 2030.
