Max Verstappen’s 2026 Future in Limbo: Mercedes and Aston Martin Set to Pounce Amid Red Bull’s Uncertain Trajectory
Max Verstappen's status in 2026 is uncertain as Mercedes and Aston Martin show interest
"I believe he will stay through 2025, but after that, he has the opportunity to evaluate his options. The year 2026 is certainly open for possibilities."
Damon Hill, the Formula 1 world champion from 1996, considers it plausible that Max Verstappen might depart from Red Bull in 2026.
The ongoing discussion about Verstappen's future in Formula 1 remains intense as Red Bull's performance continues to wane.
Although Red Bull has secured seven wins in 2024 up to this point, they have depended heavily on the exceptional talent of the Dutch driver.
Max Verstappen's efforts alone will not secure the constructors' championship for Red Bull this year, as Sergio Perez's poor performance has been a significant setback.
The future of the three-time world champion remains a hot topic of conversation, especially since the season began amid the controversy involving Christian Horner.
Since that time, Mercedes has openly expressed their interest in Verstappen, especially considering their recent improvement in performance on the track.
During the most recent episode of the F1 Nation podcast, Hill expressed his thoughts on what lies ahead for Verstappen.
"I believe he'll be present for 2025, but after that, he might take some time to evaluate the situation more clearly. As for 2026, I think it's wide open," Hill stated.
Another factor Verstappen needs to think about is the regulations coming in 2026.
In 2026, new engines will debut, marking the first time that Red Bull will produce their own power unit.
Considering the magnitude of the challenge, Red Bull will probably begin the season trailing Mercedes.
Mercedes commenced the recent engine regulations with a powerful performance, showcasing their superior power unit in the field.
Although it is improbable that they will achieve the same level of dominance again, Mercedes remains the top contender for producing the best engines and chassis.
Mercedes' advancements in 2024 could also make Verstappen more interested, as the team has shown they have a strong grasp of the current regulations.
Tom Clarkson, the co-host of the podcast, believes that Verstappen will hold off on making a decision until he observes the performance of each team with their new engines.
"He will observe the advancements made by Red Bull powertrains with their engine around this time next year," Clarkson remarked.
“He’ll observe the work being done by Mercedes HPP in Brixworth and will have the necessary data to make an informed decision for 2026.”
