Mattia Binotto’s Audi Move: The Crucial Shift that Could Reshape the F1 Driver Market
Might Mattia Binotto play a surprisingly pivotal role in the F1 driver market?
Negotiations for Sauber's 2025 seat start afresh following the appointment of a new leader.
Valtteri Bottas acknowledges that Mattia Binotti joining Audi might impact the F1 driver market.
Just four spots are left to fill for the 2025 Formula 1 driver roster.
Sauber/Audi, Red Bull, Alpine, and Mercedes need to finalize their choices, which will inevitably lead to disappointment for a few drivers.
One driver whose future remains unclear is Bottas from Sauber.
Significant alterations to Audi's management (with the company set to compete in F1 as Sauber next year) might influence operations.
Former Ferrari team boss Binotto is set to become Audi's Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer, as Andreas Seidl and Oliver Hoffman are leaving.
Jonathan Wheatley is set to depart from Red Bull and take on the role of team principal at
Bottas admitted that his discussions about remaining will be somewhat restarted.
"We had been in contact with Andreas and Oliver before, and now we are communicating with Mattia."
"That will definitely alter certain aspects. Therefore, we need to have a discussion."
"It's somewhat complex, but let's take a look."
Sauber, set to transform into Audi in 2026 with the introduction of new regulations, has secured Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg for the upcoming season but remains uncertain about their second driver.
Both Bottas and his present teammate, Guanyu Zhou, wish to remain with the team, but there is only space for one of them.
The Audi project has faced criticism, and Carlos Sainz's choice to reject them in favor of joining Williams is seen as particularly important.
Craig Slater shared on the Sky F1 podcast that the decision reflected a lack of confidence in Sauber/Audi. He highlighted the significance of the Sainz family connection, noting that Carlos Sainz Senior's victory in the Dakar Rally with Audi and the Volkswagen Group played a key role.
"It’s evident that something is amiss there, given that he chose not to go to the place that appeared to be the most logical choice for him."
Bottas commented on the new leader of the F1 team, stating: “Mattia needs to understand the team's weaknesses and strengths.
"What are the immediate and future priorities for enhancements? This process will require some time."
"Of course, there are some internal matters, but it's clear that when compared to the major teams, we still fall short in terms of manpower."
"There are specific aspects that require our attention, both within the factory and concerning the car's performance."
"Currently, we aren't where we should be. We required some new improvements and needed to move forward correctly."
"It's evident that all the choices over the past year or two have been aimed at being competitive by 2026."
"I understand that it's not the best situation in certain instances. Personally, I've often found myself struggling near the rear."
My responsibility remains to give my utmost effort. Simultaneously, I aim to motivate the team and offer my best possible contributions. That's all that is within my control right now.
"With any luck, things will become more stable from this point forward, and the path ahead will be clearer."
None of the Sauber drivers have earned any points this season.
Zhou achieved their highest placement, finishing in 11th place, at the Bahrain Grand Prix that kicked off the season.
