Mastering the Mind Game: Lando Norris and Engineer Overcome Pressures to Clinch Victory at Singapore Grand Prix
Lando Norris' race strategist shares their strategy for overcoming challenges:
"We focus on moving forward rather than fixating on what outsiders perceive as issues."
Lando Norris' race engineer has revealed insights into their strategy for managing external pressures to achieve victory in Grand Prix races.
Norris impressively clinched victory at the F1 Singapore Grand Prix in his latest race, marking his third win of the season and narrowing the gap with Max Verstappen at the top of the drivers' leaderboard.
Significantly in Singapore, Norris broke his curse of relinquishing first place when he began the race from the pole position.
However, Will Joseph, who has consistently advised Norris during his ascent in Formula 1, maintains that they never concentrated on breaking that undesirable record.
"Those topics don't need to be talked about," Joseph mentioned to the F1 Nation podcast.
"We discuss our strong points, review our driving performance from Friday, and identify potential areas for improvement."
"There's no need to focus on issues others point out that we may not perceive as problematic."
"At the plant, we examined the initial phases of races. We anticipated discovering something extraordinary. However, it turned out not to be as terrible as many were suggesting."
"We talk about what we can manage, and the outcomes are evident."
He stated, "We laid some ghosts to rest."
"No one can argue anymore that we're stuck at the starting line, unable to take the lead in the opening lap."
"We were in the lead from beginning to end and made no mistakes."
The sole imperfections in what was an impeccable weekend for the McLaren racer in Singapore occurred when he momentarily made contact with the barriers.
Joseph disclosed the response witnessed within McLaren's team area.
"When Lando mentioned he collided with the barrier, we followed our standard protocol to inspect everything," he explained.
You're attempting to figure out if: Is there a puncture? Is the front wing damaged?
"If anything else has been damaged, there's little to be done. However, if the front wing is the issue, you have the option to halt and replace it."
"You're aiming to evaluate that rapidly."
"The harm was not significant enough to warrant any action."
"When we pulled into the pit stop, we had already concluded that there was no need to make any adjustments to the front wing."
"Did it impact the outcome? To a minimal extent. Upon review, it slightly tarnished the results. There was a loss of pressure. However, it was minor, in my opinion."
Joseph provided a recap of Norris' victory in Singapore, stating, "He performed excellently. Right from the first lap, we were competitive. Lando showed his remarkable speed."
"We made efforts to incrementally increase the car's speed. His performance has been outstanding.
In the competition, we mentioned there were a couple of possible outcomes – right from the start, it was evident we had the opportunity to accelerate and create a lead. "Both of us were surprised by the extent of the lead we managed to establish.
"We passed through a period designated for a Safety Car, followed by a timeframe allocated for a pit stop.
"The speed was incredible. We were amazed by how fast it was."
