Martin Brundle Labels Red Bull’s Italian GP Struggles ‘Too Strange’ as McLaren Closes the Gap
Martin Brundle offers a "too strange" opinion on Red Bull's troubles
"Max described the car as a 'monster' after the race, and everything seems too odd."
Sky Sports F1 commentator Martin Brundle has called Red Bull's dramatic decline in performance "too strange" after their disappointing showing at the Italian Grand Prix.
At Monza, Red Bull was evidently the fourth-quickest team, with Max Verstappen ending up in sixth place, trailing more than 35 seconds behind the race victor, Charles Leclerc.
Their disappointing performance on Sunday has reduced their lead over McLaren to only eight points in the F1 constructors' championship.
Max Verstappen continues to hold a significant advantage in the drivers' standings, leading by 62 points over Lando Norris with eight races left in the season.
Considering the current performance trends of McLaren compared to Red Bull, Verstappen's likelihood of holding onto the championship decreases as each race goes by.
The recent decline in Red Bull's performance is puzzling, especially given Verstappen's strong showing in the first four races of the season.
In his column for Sky Sports following the race, Brundle shared his views on the situation at Red Bull.
"Brundle noted that Red Bull opted for a different approach by starting Verstappen and Sergio Perez on hard compound tires, given their starting positions of seventh and eighth on the grid."
As the leading drivers fiercely competed against each other, this strategy seemed wise, particularly since there was no safety car in play. However, some messy pit stops on laps 22 and 23, followed by a relatively slow pace and a decision to go with a two-stop strategy, ultimately led to Red Bull finishing in sixth and eighth places.
After the race, Max referred to the car as a 'monster,' which appeared very unusual.
"They were dominant at the beginning of the season, and Max achieved a comfortable victory in his 10th consecutive race at Monza last year. However, this year he finished 38 seconds after the winner."
Red Bull is expected to face additional challenges with the upcoming races in Azerbaijan and Singapore.
Red Bull faced challenges on street circuits this year, with Singapore being their poorest performance in an otherwise commanding 2023 season.
On the other hand, McLaren has demonstrated versatility by delivering strong performances across various tracks, despite securing only three victories this season.
