After enduring a wait of more than 1,000 days for his inaugural Ducati triumph, Marc Marquez has secured his second win within just one week, achieving an unexpected victory at the San Marino MotoGP.
Describing his weekend as 'ruined' following a qualifying accident that placed him ninth on the starting grid, the Gresini Ducati racer took advantage of a short rain shower to seize the lead in the race.
Marquez then maintained his distance from current titleholder Francesco Bagnaia and the other factory Ducati ridden by Enea Bastianini until he crossed the finish line.
"Perhaps Fausto [Gresini] sent some rain our way," Marquez remarked in parc ferme, gesturing towards the sky.
At the same time, Jorge Martin saw most of his lead in the championship disappear due to a pit-stop strategy that went wrong, causing the Sprint race winner to fall a lap behind.
Bagnaia managed to steer clear of the clutch issue that occurred yesterday, maintaining his position at the front as they entered Turn 1. Martin moved into third place, just behind his teammate Franco Morbidelli.
Martin quickly overtook Morbidelli, but a cautious move to slip past Bagnaia on the second lap nearly resulted in calamity.
Withdrawing at the perfect moment, Martin remained patiently behind Bagnaia until the rain began to pour more heavily after completing 7 of the 27 laps.
Morbidelli was the first to have an accident and drop out of third place, while Martin took a significant risk by deciding to pit at the end of the lap, even though Bagnaia and the other leading riders chose to continue on the track.
Bagnaia slowed down, causing a line of riders to form, while Marc Marquez maneuvered through the group to take the lead.
Importantly, the rain stopped, resulting in Martin being 12 seconds behind and in 15th place, with wet tires.
The Spanish driver understood that the situation was hopeless and, similar to others who had bet on heavier rain, returned to the pits for slick tires on the 10th lap.
Martin, who had fallen a lap behind, re-entered the race directly behind the leading duel between Marquez and Bagnaia and ultimately secured 15th place.
Bagnaia seemed satisfied to trail behind the Gresini rider during the middle portions of the race, but there was a risk that Bastianini might catch up to him.
Still feeling the effects of last Sunday's crash with Alex Marquez at Aragon, Bagnaia fell behind Marquez towards the end, while Bastianini opted for a secure third place.
Brad Binder, Marco Bezzecchi, who started from the front row, and Alex Marquez rounded out the top six positions.
Jack Miller capitalized on the wet weather to climb to third place during the rain, but eventually dropped to eighth, finishing just behind Fabio Quartararo's Yamaha.
KTM newcomer Pedro Acosta launched an initial offensive but collided with Morbidelli, losing a wing in the process. He later fell while in 4th position and re-entered the race at the rear of the pack.
The only riders besides Martin who decided to switch to wet tires were Acosta, Vinales, Espargaro, Raul Fernandez, and Alex Rins.
This afternoon’s race grid did not feature any Repsol Honda bikes, as Luca Marini and his teammate Joan Mir were both absent due to illness.
Pol Espargaro participated in his third race weekend of the season for KTM, while HRC test rider Stefan Bradl joined the lineup as a wild-card entrant for this weekend.
This season, Misano will be the venue for two back-to-back MotoGP races, beginning with the San Marino Grand Prix this weekend.
A formal MotoGP testing session is scheduled for Monday, ahead of the 'Emilia Romagna' race at the Italian track, which will replace the India/Kazakhstan round on September 20-22.
Updated regulations for tyre pressure in 2024 stipulate that riders must maintain a minimum front tyre pressure of 1.8 bar, reduced from the previous 1.88 bar, for 60% of a Grand Prix race distance, up from the previous 50%, or for 30% of a Sprint race.
The consequence for not achieving this minimum in a Grand Prix will be a 16-second time penalty added after the race, whereas for a Sprint or short race, an 8-second penalty will be applied.
Nonetheless, the rainfall caused the tire pressure system to be inactive for today's race.
