Marquez Triumphs at Aragon MotoGP But Championship Hopes Remain Dim
Marc Marquez's hopes for the championship remain low, even after his win at the Aragon MotoGP.
Marc Marquez, an eight-time World Champion, clinched a win at the Aragon MotoGP, trimming his gap in the championship standings by 70 points. Despite this, he believes he's still not close enough to be seen as a potential candidate for the championship title.
Besides trailing Jorge Martin by 70 points, Marquez also finds himself 47 points short of Francesco Bagnaia, the year's leading victor with a total of seven Grand Prix triumphs and three Sprint victories in 2024.
"In the Aragon post-race press conference, when questioned about his chances for the championship, Marquez acknowledged, "No, we are significantly behind. We've been dropping points, increasingly so. The gap is just too wide."
"It's not just a single rider; there are actually two riders demonstrating greater consistency than we do."
"A single weekend won't transform our existence. It will certainly aid us, but it won't bring about a revolution. We're too distant to contend for the championship this year.
"However, let's aim to secure a spot among the top three. That seems like an achievable target. There are still numerous points up for grabs and many unpredictable events ahead, especially considering the storms and rainfall common in Asia, which can change the game."
“However, we continue to find joy in what we do, and this is paramount for me. We’ll strive to persist and compete with the leading figures.”
Highlighting the importance of maintaining steadiness to contend for the title, Marquez underscored the atypical circumstances surrounding the Aragon race.
"This weekend was exceptionally great, and the experience was incredible," he stated. "However, we must maintain a realistic perspective as the conditions were quite unique. For me, the Red Bull Ring Grand Prix was more significant as I felt incredibly strong and was nearly at the same level as the leading competitors.
"In this context, the significance of winning is paramount, and our next objective is to achieve steadiness. It's crucial for us to grasp the nuances during the competitions, although I'm aware there will be occasions when we face greater challenges compared to other times. Achieving this steadiness will represent another critical factor."
Marquez highlighted the case of Enea Bastianini, who, following his consecutive wins at the British Grand Prix, emerged as a significant contender for the championship. However, he finished in fifth place at Aragon, having started from 14th on the grid.
"Marquez shared that they aim to replicate their success going forward, emphasizing the importance of consistency. He acknowledged that while they can perform well in specific events—highlighting Enea Bastianini's speed at Silverstone—the challenge lies in maintaining that level of performance consistently."
Jorge Martin, who is currently ahead in the championship by 23 points following the Aragon race, concurred to an extent with Marquez.
"The championship frontrunner mentioned, "Marc is quite a distance behind. However, if he begins to secure victories in every race weekend, he could challenge for the championship title."
"Just a couple of races back, Enea Bastianini found himself back in contention for the championship, but then he fell out of the running. Now, Marc has emerged as a strong contender following his performance in Austria, proving himself to be among the elite riders capable of vying for the title."
