Marini and Mir Test New Honda Updates at Misano Despite Illness Setbacks
Luca Marini experienced noticeable improvements with Honda's MotoGP enhancements during the Misano trial
Following their absence from the weekend's Grand Prix, Luca Marini and Joan Mir returned to action for a single-day MotoGP testing session at Misano.
Luca Marini and Joan Mir participated in the single-day official MotoGP trial at Misano after both were absent from the Grand Prix due to sickness.
Both riders had several new components to evaluate, including a prominent new fairing that seems to replicate the design Ducati has employed on its Desmosedici GP24 since the February Sepang trials, along with various chassis elements.
Marini concluded the trial in the 21st position, with Mir trailing closely behind at 22nd. Despite still recovering from the sickness that sidelined him during Sunday's Grand Prix, the Italian rider managed to see the benefits in the updated components provided by Honda.
"Getting back on the bike today was crucial to test out some engineering tweaks," Marini explained, after withdrawing from the San Marino Grand Prix on race morning due to an unexpected illness.
Truthfully, today wasn't my best day, so we had to scale back our agenda somewhat. We managed to complete the bulk of our tasks in the morning, leaving only a few items to finish off in the afternoon.
"Despite not being at my peak, we noticed the improvements Honda made and I'm optimistic that my insights will assist them in choosing their path forward. I believe we discovered several advantages, not only for what lies ahead but also for the upcoming races."
Joan Mir, similar to Marini, was unable to compete in Sunday's race due to health problems. Starting from Friday, the Spanish rider's condition prevented him from participating in any events over the weekend at Misano.
Scheduled to resume testing on Monday, Mir hadn't fully recovered but was nevertheless ready to assess several new products from HRC.
"Today, I'm feeling improved yet not completely recovered," Mir stated. "Sufficiently recovered to participate in testing, which feels like a victory considering the past few days. It was a rigorous day as we experimented with various aspects, including aerodynamics and several other components.
"We've uncovered valuable insights, yet there's more to explore ahead. Now, we should pause, rejuvenate, and allow the engineers to take over."
