Marc Marquez Reunites with Former Honda Crew to Celebrate Aragon Triumph: ‘They Also Suffered with Me
Marc Marquez brought together Santi Hernandez and the Honda team to share in the triumph at Aragon, acknowledging their support and expressing that they endured the challenges alongside him. "They went through the tough times with me and offered significant assistance," he said.
Marc Marquez mentioned that he assembled his previous factory Honda MotoGP team before the San Marino Grand Prix to encourage them to “feel included” in his victory at Aragon.
The eight-time world champion broke a 1043-day streak without a MotoGP grand prix win by triumphing at Aragon, marking his first victory on the Gresini Ducati.
Marquez decided to leave Honda after an 11-year stint at the end of 2023. He will be joining the Gresini team and will ride a GP23, aiming to regain his competitive edge after facing several challenging seasons on the RC213V.
He couldn't bring any of his former team members from Honda to Gresini, except for tyre technician Javi Ortiz. However, he still regards them as family.
When questioned on Thursday about whether he had communicated with his ex-crew chief Santi Hernandez, Marquez responded: "Yesterday, I visited the Repsol Honda garage, assembled the entire team, and told them to 'consider this victory as theirs too'."
"Both Santi and others experienced the hardships alongside me. They provided significant support during my lowest times."
"The people in that section of the garage, I want to mention on a personal note, also feel included in my journey."
Following his last race with Honda in Valencia the previous year, Marquez stated during his media debrief that the team would be “the team of my life”.
Hernandez was also prohibited from joining Gresini as Marquez's crew chief because Marquez refused to commit to a contract longer than one year at that time.
Before last weekend's Aragon Grand Prix, Marquez hadn't secured a victory since the 2021 Misano race. The Spanish rider has achieved a total of four wins at the Italian track in the top-tier category.
As he anticipates the San Marino Grand Prix, Marquez feels that his objectives for 2024 have been achieved following the Aragon race. He aims to begin Friday's session with the same confidence in his bike that he experienced in Austria.
He stated, "Naturally, my goal for this season has already been achieved in Aragon."
"Now it's time to continue our efforts. Certainly, after the weekend, we can relax a little, but it's essential to leverage that renewed energy and confidence to persist in our work."
"Each race offers new lessons for both the team and the bike."
"In every race, we learn something new and gain more confidence. Ideally, I'd want to begin here with a similar feeling to what I had at the Red Bull Ring. That would be sufficient for me because I already felt good there, even though I understand that the conditions at Aragon were quite unique."
"I don't think it's the surface; rather, it's the nighttime storms. However, Martin, Bagnaia, and Bastianini are going to be incredibly quick, and we'll do our best to keep up with them."
