Marc Marquez Prioritizes Qualifying Prowess Over 2025 Ducati Developments at Misano MotoGP Test
Marc Marquez opted to concentrate on enhancing his single lap qualifying speed instead of trying out Ducati's 2025 advancements during the Misano MotoGP test.
Marc Marquez disclosed that during the post-San Marino MotoGP test at Misano, he primarily concentrated on tweaking his Gresini Ducati GP23 setup. He only briefly tested the 2025-spec Michelin tire in preparation for the upcoming season.
The Spanish rider entered the one-day test fresh off his third MotoGP win in just over a week at Misano. With one Sprint win and two full-length race victories, the six-time MotoGP World Champion skillfully navigated tricky conditions to catch and surpass Pecco Bagnaia.
By focusing on fine-tuning his current year-old GP23 package, Marquez managed to reduce the gap between him and Jorge Martin in the overall standings to 53 points. Meanwhile, the Ducati Lenovo factory team, with which he will race next season, dedicated their test time to developing electronics for the 2025 model.
"We used the bike available to us and experimented with some of the strategies they had previously implemented in other grand prix races to ultimately eliminate them from consideration," Marquez, who ended the day with the seventh fastest time, explained to Motorsport.
"We've implemented a minor measure, a temporary pause, so that if any issues come up tomorrow, we'll be prepared with solutions."
"The final practice session, typically the time to consolidate everything, was conducted using the bike from the previous day, which summed up the day's events."
Although Marquez is still considered unlikely to win the title even with his recent streak of wins, he expressed his determination to end the year on a high note by concentrating on enhancing his single lap time attack performances.
Certainly, Marquez acknowledges that he needs to enhance his performance in securing pole positions and front row starts, as he has only achieved two pole positions and four front row starts this year. This improvement is crucial for him to make a strong push for the championship title.
"The foundation of our setup is mostly settled, and although we experimented with a few adjustments, we quickly reverted to what I find most comfortable, especially to maintain race pace. Moving forward, my focus is on enhancing our performance in the upcoming races, particularly by improving our sustained attack."
Discussing the 2025 Michelin tyre specifications, Marquez, along with his peers, noted that the tyre felt "very different" and gave it a tentative approval.
"I've experienced it myself, and it's quite distinct. The most noticeable differences are in the tyres, which offer a lot of stability. If you brake late, the performance improves, but initially, during the first laps out of the pit, it feels like the bike is hard to manage and very heavy. The flexibility of the tyre needs improvement."
"I don't experience that issue; the bike remains very steady when braking. In fact, in our team, the bike's braking stability is one of its key features."
