Marc Marquez Prioritizes Qualifying Pace Over 2025 Ducati Developments at Misano Test
Marc Marquez opts out of exploring Ducati's 2025 updates during the Misano MotoGP trial, prioritizing his efforts on enhancing his performance in single lap qualifiers.
Marc Marquez disclosed that during the post-San Marino MotoGP Misano test, he primarily tested the 2025-spec Michelin tyre in preparation for the upcoming season. However, he dedicated most of his efforts to enhancing his Gresini Ducati GP23 setup.
The Spanish rider entered the one-day trial riding high from his third MotoGP win – consisting of one Sprint and two regular races – in just over a week at Misano. The six-time MotoGP World Champion expertly navigated tricky conditions to successfully overtake Pecco Bagnaia.
By focusing on refining his existing GP23 package during the test, Marquez was able to narrow the gap to Jorge Martin in the total standings to 53 points. Meanwhile, the Ducati Lenovo factory team, which Marquez is set to join next season, dedicated their efforts to developing electronics for the 2025-spec during the same test.
Marquez, who secured the seventh fastest time of the day, shared with Motorsport, "We utilized the bike available to us and experimented with components previously deployed in several grand prix races, ultimately to conclude their ineffectiveness and remove them from consideration."
"We've conducted a small experiment, implementing a temporary halt to prepare for any issues that might surface tomorrow, ensuring we have the answers ready."
"In the final trial, typically the time you consolidate all elements, I opted for the previous day's motorcycle, that was the gist of the day."
Despite being considered a long shot for the championship despite his streak of wins, Marquez emphasized his dedication to ending the season on a high note, concentrating on enhancing his performance in individual lap time trials.
Certainly, having secured just two pole positions and four starts from the front row this season, Marquez acknowledges that enhancing this aspect is crucial for a potential surge towards championship success.
"We primarily focused on establishing the groundwork and experimented briefly, yet quickly reverted back to what I personally prefer, especially in terms of sustaining race speed. Our remaining objective, which I aim to enhance in the upcoming races, is to better our ability to progressively increase our pace."
Addressing the 2025 model Michelin tire, Marquez aligned with his peers in stating it was 'quite distinct', offering it a tentative approval.
"I've experimented with it and noticed it's quite distinct, especially with major alterations at the tyre level, offering a lot of stability. If you apply the brakes later, it begins to perform effectively. However, it's a tyre that initially feels like you've forgotten how to ride a motorcycle as soon as you exit the pit, making the bike feel extremely cumbersome. There's a need for improvement in the tyre's flexibility."
"I haven't encountered that issue; the motorcycle maintains its balance well when slowing down. Specifically, in our team, what distinguishes our motorcycle is its steadiness during deceleration."
