Marc Marquez Eyes Factory Team Ambitions for 2025: Exploring the MotoGP Champion’s Options and Future Plans

Marc Marquez expresses a desire for a factory team – what choices does he have?

Marc Marquez is aiming not just for a factory motorcycle but also for a factory MotoGP team by 2025.

During the Jerez weekend, Marc Marquez hinted at his future plans in MotoGP with some intriguing insights.

On the brink of his Spanish Grand Prix appearance, the racer who has clinched the world championship title eight times made a stunning move by leaving Honda to sign with the Gresini Ducati team, a satellite outfit, for this season, as he disclosed:

"My objective is to give it my all in order to secure a factory bike for the upcoming year."

The anticipation for a new model of the Desmosedici for 2025 comes as no shock, considering the current bike is already a year old.

This aligns with speculation that Gresini might secure this type of equipment, potentially for one of its competitors, if Pramac decides to move to Yamaha.

Alternatively, should Pramac, currently serving as Ducati's official secondary team, extend its agreement with Ducati, Marquez might still fulfill his ambition of riding a 'factory bike' by joining Paolo Campinoti's team in 2025.

However, during questioning about that possibility, Marquez disclosed the most significant news of the weekend about his career intentions. He essentially informed the Spanish press that his ambitions weren't limited to securing a factory bike; he was targeting a factory team.

"Marquez has been quoted as saying that Pramac is an outstanding team with factory bikes, demonstrating their ability to contend for a World Championship, despite not being a factory team."

"It's a proficient team… satellite, yet it isn't an official factory team."

Emphasizing his lack of contractual obligations for the upcoming season and hinting at having multiple possibilities at his disposal, the #93 rider recognized the Ducati as the "most well-rounded motorcycle among the competitors… [and] my comprehension of it continues to deepen."

Considering Marquez's aspirations, securing a premier position with Ducati, riding side by side with Francesco Bagnaia, would undoubtedly be his top priority. Such an arrangement would fulfill all criteria for a factory bike and team, while also keeping him on what's considered 'the most well-rounded motorcycle' – the Desmosedici.

Choosing to remain with Ducati would enable Marquez to have Gresini crew chief Frankie Carchedi join him at the factory team, providing the opportunity to leverage a full year of familiarity with the Desmosedici.

However, Pramac's front-runner Jorge Martin has indicated for some time his intention to seek opportunities outside the team if he doesn't secure a spot on the official Ducati team next season. Given that Bagnaia's current teammate, Enea Bastianini, is also ahead of Marquez in the initial rankings, Marquez's advancement is still uncertain.

Gigi Dall'Igna expressed the tough reality that they would have to turn down several significant contenders in selecting Bagnaia's teammate for 2025. "The choice we face is incredibly challenging. Just the thought of having to make this decision is enough to make me tremble," he stated.

Who else could the management team of Marquez be in discussions with regarding the aim for the factory team?

Considering their current lack of competitiveness, it's safe to say that a team from Japan, be it Honda or Yamaha, is definitely out of the running.

This could position KTM and Aprilia as possible alternatives for Marquez should he not secure a spot with Ducati.

At Aprilia, the future of their rider lineup remains uncertain as both Maverick Vinales and Aleix Espargaro have yet to secure their positions beyond this current season.

The RS-GP has demonstrated its ability to secure victories with either rider, but at 34 years old, Espargaro stands as the most senior competitor in the lineup and has acknowledged considering a transition to a testing position.

Marquez's move to KTM appears to be a challenging prospect, except for the connection through Red Bull's individual sponsorship. This is because Brad Binder has a contract until 2026, and it's anticipated that rising talent Pedro Acosta will team up with him in the upcoming season. This would involve a possible exchange of seats between KTM and GASGAS involving Jack Miller.

Is there a possibility that KTM might transfer Binder to Tech3 to open a spot for Marquez? Such a move would be quite unexpected, especially considering Pit Beirer's comments when the South African's contract renewal was revealed last season, which emphasized their anticipation for Binder to "remain with orange".

Aprilia and KTM currently have the unique opportunity to provide Marquez with the potential to become their inaugural MotoGP champion, a feat Ducati cannot currently match.

Marquez acknowledged the urgency of initiating discussions for 2025, recognizing that opportunities might start to diminish if he delays any further.

Conversely, Marquez's most significant contributions are his performances, and his pace on the Ducati is showing signs of progress at every event.

"Marquez noted that conversations are starting to happen regarding Jerez, Le Mans, and Mugello, pointing out a specific period. He emphasized the need for patience at this time and expressed his belief in having the potential to keep progressing on the circuit."

It's important to note that Ducati was ready to elevate Martin to the official team automatically this year, should he have clinched the 2023 championship in the final race at Valencia.

It's worth noting that Martin, similar to Bastianini, was already committed to Ducati Corse. However, this emphasizes that a champion riding for Ducati is likely to receive a warm reception at the factory team.

Having lost the top position in both the COTA Grand Prix and the Jerez Sprint, Marquez ended up only 0.372 seconds short of the victor Bagnaia, following an exciting final showdown in the Spanish MotoGP event.

Marquez clinched his latest victory in MotoGP at the Misano track back in 2021,">king his 59th win and final triumph with Repsol Honda. As it stands, he's ranked sixth in the global championship, trailing Martin by 32 points, despite there being 37 points up for grabs during each race weekend.
