Marc Marquez Ends Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend, Overcoming Emotional and Physical Hurdles
Marc Marquez admitted he "put pressure on myself" to achieve a flawless performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He mentioned that he didn't enjoy the Sprint race because he was aware of the day's significance.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, describing the event as "perfect."
Marquez led every practice session, secured pole position with a margin of 0.8 seconds, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The Warm Up session was the only one not led by Marquez, as he didn't record a lap time due to the track being damp from rain that fell overnight and into Sunday morning.
"It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez remarked during the post-race press conference. “We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I chose with the team to remain in the garage."
Marquez discussed the emotional tension he had experienced over nearly three years without a win, and the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th premier class victory.
"We felt incredible right from the start of the race," he mentioned. "It was an exceptionally long race, and managing my emotions in the final laps was challenging. However, upon crossing the finish line, it felt as though I had shed 3 to 4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back with each step, winning felt unbelievable. Right away, my thoughts turned to the journey we had taken, the people who supported me, and my loved ones—my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team in particular offering me the chance to compete. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and are continuing to move forward."
Marquez created a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various things in the last few laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about being on the podium," he mentioned. "Beyond just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it's constantly a celebration with them."
"Beyond anything else, the most important factor was the people surrounding me. In times of extreme difficulty, being in a challenging situation, having a genuinely compassionate team, people who were more affected by my struggles than I was — that was what truly mattered."
“The celebration felt unusual because, in other races, the adrenaline was much higher when finishing in second or third place. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline.”
Marquez, who led every session except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, confessed to feeling some pressure to secure a win in the Grand Prix to cap off his weekend.
"Today, I felt a lot of pressure," he explained. "As you noticed during yesterday's Sprint, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware that today was crucial and I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I made an effort to stay focused. When you have the necessary speed, it seems like you can handle everything, remain consistent, and make smart decisions. However, if you lack speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to stay competitive with the top contenders."
After securing victory, Marquez places this win alongside his 2021 German Grand Prix success, which marked his return to triumph following his arm injury at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany," Marquez stated.
"When facing numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of winning takes on a new meaning."
"Yes, I have achieved 60 wins, but those two particular victories, along with my first win in MotoGP, stand out as the most significant. They provide a unique boost in confidence and give you that added assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, I was in the zone, but I made sure to stay very focused to avoid any errors."
Despite it being his 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, Marquez revealed that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez recognized that a race victory is inevitable. He mentioned that it was there he understood they would have their chances. However, competing for the championship is another matter, and they must continue to put in the effort for that goal.
"But while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would come eventually."
